Erythrura trichroa

Identification

12cm. Green body, yellow abdomen, blue head, red lower rump and upper tail coverts, brown iris and feet, black bill; female - duller blue head.

Distribution

North-eastern Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Federated States of Micronesia, New Caledonia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

Taxonomy

There are 11 subspecies.

Habitat

Edge of moist lowland forest and montane.

Behaviour

The diet includes grass seeds, weeds and insects.

4-6 eggs are laid and incubated for 12-13 days; the young fledge at 21 days.
