Identification

16cm
Male

  • Head mainly black
  • Conspicuous crest
  • Narrow white collar
  • Whitish underparts
  • Browny-grey flanks
  • Brown back
  • Black wings with white edges
  • White tips to the tail.

Female

  • Chestnut crest
  • Pale brown face with black specks
  • Black streaks on buffy breast.

Distribution

Trinidad, Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, northern Brazil and northeastern Peru.

Taxonomy

There are 8 subspecies.

Habitat

Light woodland, scrub, savanna, shrubs and trees close to the water's edge.

Behaviour

Breeding

A deep cup nest is suspended below a branch or vine and 2 purple-lined white eggs are laid; they are incubated by both sexes for 14 days, the female always brooding at night. The chicks fledge in another 12 days.

Diet

The diet includes insects, arthropods, small lizards and berries.
