Identification
14cm. Brown, white throat and chest, pale blue skin around eye, black in front of and behind eye, short tail.
Distribution
Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and Peru.
Taxonomy
9 Subspecies recognized, forming two groups, separated by the Andes.
West of the Andes:
- G. l. olivascens from Honduras to Panama
- G. l. bicolor in Panama and NW Colombia
- G. l. daguae in C Colombia
- G. l. aequatorialis in extreme S Colombia and Ecuador
- G. l. ruficeps in N Colombia
East of the Andes:
- G. l. leucaspis in C Colombia
- G. l. castaneus in SC Colombia, E Ecuador and N Peru
- G. l. lateralis mainly in N Brazil
- G. l. peruanus in NC Peru
The first group is sometimes split as Gymnopithys bicolor and retains the common name Bicolored Antbird. The remaining G. leucaspis would be named White-cheeked Antbird then.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests.
Behaviour
It follows an ant-swarm army; the ants stir up insects and spiders in leaf litter which the antbirds feed on.
