Identification

15 cm
Male:

  • Black face patches
  • Yellow crown and upper breast
  • Yellow underparts

Female:

  • Black head
  • Bright yellow underparts
  • Dark upperparts with yellow streaks on wings

Distribution

Africa:
Western Africa: Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo
Eastern Africa: South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi

Habitat

Female, nominate subspecies

Cultivated areas, open woods, forest margins and in towns throughout highland areas.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of insects, but fruit and seeds are also eaten.
