Spinus spinescens

Carduelis spinescens


9–11 cm

  • Greenish plumage
  • Black crown
  • Yellow wing panel
  • Slight fork in tail


South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador



There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • S. s. spinescens (capitanea):
  • S. s. nigricauda:
  • Temperate central and western Andes of northern Colombia

Formerly placed in genus Carduelis. A third subspecies S. s. capitanea is recognised by some authorities[2]


Moist montanes, low bushes and shrubs along forest edges.



Their diet consists mostly of seeds and flowers
