Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- S. s. spinescens (capitanea):
- S. s. nigricauda:
- Temperate central and western Andes of northern Colombia
Formerly placed in genus Carduelis. A third subspecies S. s. capitanea is recognised by some authorities[2]
Habitat
Moist montanes, low bushes and shrubs along forest edges.

Their diet consists mostly of seeds and flowers
