Identification
11–13 cm (4-5 inches)
- Greyish-brown back and tail
- Rufous-brown wings
- Primaries edged white, black and rufous, giving striped effect
- Grey head and nape
- Crown grey with brown lines
- White throat with dusky streaks
- Grey belly
- Yellow iris
Distribution
Asia: Patchily from north-eastern India (Assam and Arunachal Pradesh) to Burma, southern China, northern Vietnam and Laos
Locally common, although manipurensis is quite scarce.
Taxonomy
Like other Fulvettas this species was formerly placed in Alcippe3.
Was formerly considered conspecific with Taiwan Fulvetta and Grey-hooded Fulvetta.
Subspecies
Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:
- F. c. manipurensis from north-eastern India over northern Myanmar to adjacent southern China
- F. c. tonkinensis in southern China (Yunnan), Laos and northern Vietnam
Habitat
Broadleaf evergreen forest, also coniferous forest. Found in the undergrowth and in bamboo thickets. In China from 1400m to 3400m in summer, in India from 1400m to 2500m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds mainly on insects. Takes also small molluscs, some vegetable matter or seeds.
Found in pairs or small parties, foraging actively in manner of a tit.
Breeding
Breeding season April to June in China, from April in India. Nest in China is a neat cup made of leaf skeletons, leaves, grasses and moss and placed in fork of a low bush or dwarf bamboo. The clutch consists of 4 - 5 eggs.
Movements
All populations are resident.3
