Male

  • Grey overal plumage
  • Black patches, edged white on lower back
  • Black wings and tail

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil

Taxonomy

Was formerly included in Scale-backed Antbird together with Xingu Scale-backed Antbird.
Formerly placed in genus Hylophylax.

Subspecies

Five subspecies recognized[1]:

Habitat

Mostly found in terra firma forests in the understorey.

Behaviour

Diet

They eat a variety of insects, larva, arthropods and occasionally small lizards They are sometimes seen with other species near army ant swarms.

Breeding

They construct cup shaped nests from fibres, dry grass, and palm leaves, sometimes using natural cavities. The clutch normally consists of two pinkish eggs with reddish spots and streaks. Both adults incubate the eggs. After fledging the adults care for one chick each.
