Genus: Willisornis
Description
This genus contains only one species, the Scale-backed Antbird.
Taxonomy
Willisornis is a genus in the family Thamnophilidae.
It was formerly placed in genus Hylophylax but recent data convinced the SACC (South American Classification Committee) that Scale-backed Antbird did not belong in that genus: the closest relatives of Scale-backed Antbirds seems to be members of the genera Phlegopsis, Rhegmatorhina, Pithys, Gymnopithys, and Phaenostictus, while other members of Hylophylax have members of the genus Hypocnemoides as their closest relative.
Scale-backed Antbird was originally described in genus Dichropogon, but that name was in pre-ordaned for use as a genus for Palearctic asilid flies, which necessitates the new name Willisornis.
