Identification

Male

• Slate-grey
• White at the bend of the wing
• Small white wing-bar
  

Female

• Olive-brown back
• White dorsal patch (concealed)
• Bright rufous-orange underparts extending to sides of head and forecrown.

Distribution

Central and South America
Central America: Panama
South America: Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil

Taxonomy

Placed in genus Cercomacroides by Clements.

Subspecies^[1]

There are 6 subspecies:

• C. n. nigrescens:

• Coastal Suriname, French Guiana, adjacent Brazil (Amazonas, Pará)

• C. n. aequatorialis:

• East Andean slopes southern Colombia to north-eastern Peru (Amazonas, San Martín)

• C. n. notata:

• East Andean slope of central Peru (western Ucayali to Junín)

• C. n. approximans:

• South-central Amazonian Brazil and eastern Bolivia (Beni, Santa Cruz)

• C. n. ochrogyna:

• East-central Amazonian Brazil

• C. n. fuscicauda:

• South-eastern Colombia to north-eastern Bolivia and south-western Amazonian Brazil - sometimes split as Riparian Antbird

Habitat

Dense undergrowth in varzea forest.
