Cercomacroides nigrescens

Identification

14–15 cm (5½-6 in)
Male

  • Slate-grey
  • White at the bend of the wing
  • Small white wing-bar

Female

  • Olive-brown back
  • White dorsal patch (concealed)
  • Bright rufous-orange underparts extending to sides of head and forecrown.

Distribution

Central and South America
Central America: Panama
South America: Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil

Taxonomy

Riparian Antbird was formerly included in this species.
Formerly placed in genus Cercomacra.

Subspecies

There are 5 subspecies[1]:

  • C. n. nigrescens:
  • C. n. aequatorialis:
  • East Andean slopes southern Colombia to north-eastern Peru (Amazonas, San Martín)
  • C. n. notata:
  • East Andean slope of central Peru (western Ucayali to Junín)
  • C. n. approximans:
  • South-central Amazonian Brazil and eastern Bolivia (Beni, Santa Cruz)
  • C. n. ochrogyna:

The subspecies C. n. fuscicauda, formerly included with this species, has now been split into a separate species of Riparian Antbird (C. fuscicauda).

Habitat

Dense undergrowth in varzea forest.

Behaviour

Diet

There is not a lot of information available. Their main diet consists of insects and probably spiders.
