Bucco macrodactylus

Identification

  • Dark brown plumage
  • White breast
  • Chestnut cap
  • Narrow orange collar on upper back
  • Orange spot at side of neck
  • Black collar on upper breast
  • Black eye stripe across lower eye from side to bill
  • Two parallel bright white stripes
  • Stout, short, decurved black bill
  • Short light-buff whiskered moustachial feathers
  • Black iris and legs

Distribution

South America: found in south-eastern Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, northern Bolivia and western Amazonian Brazil.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1]; subspecies caurensis generally being considered invalid[2].

Habitat

Humid lowland forest near water at forest edges but can also be found in scrubby forest away from water.
