Identification

- Glossy black plumage
- Bluish-gray shoulders
- Bill: upturned, hooked at tip. Lower mandible is very pointed
Distribution
South America: found in the Andes of Colombia to western Venezuela, Ecuador and extreme northern Peru.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
High altitude Polylepis forest, forest borders, overgrown pastures and flower gardens; observed at heights up to 3525 m
Behaviour
Often seen in mixed species flocks.
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of nectar and insects.
