Identification
13-13.5 cm. Dark olive brown upperparts, white underparts, grey head, buff supercilium, buff rump, flanks and upper tail, black lower tail. Sexes similar. Juvenile - brown upperparts, head and breast, paler rump.
Distribution
Brazil, Honduras and northwestern Peru.
Taxonomy
There are 6 subspecies.
Formerly placed in genus Basileuterus.
Habitat
Forests to 1500m, near water.
Behaviour
Both parents build a domed nest with side entrance; it is placed on a sloping bank. 2 white eggs are laid which are incubated for 16-17 days; the young fledge 13-14 days later.
The diet includes insects, spiders and small invertebrates.
