Distribution

Central and South America
Central America: Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama
South America: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Basileuterus or in Phaeothlypis.

Subspecies^[1]

There are 6 subspecies.

• M. f. leucopygia:

• Tropical north-central Honduras to western Panama (Veraguas)

• M. f. veraguensis:

• Tropical south-western Costa Rica to central Panama (Canal Zone)

• M. f. semicervina:

• Tropical eastern Panama (Darién) to south-western Ecuador (El Oro and western Loja)

• M. f. motacilla:

• Northern Colombia (upper Magdalena Valley in Tolima and Huila)

• M. f. fulvicauda::

• Eastern Colombia to Ecuador, south central Peru (east of the Andes) and western Amazonian Brazil (east to the upper Madeira and upper Teles Pires rivers); populations in northern Bolivia (Pando, La Paz) probably also this subspecies

• M. f. significans:

• Tropical south-eastern Peru (Inambari and Tambopata drainages) to north-western Bolivia

Habitat

Rain forest and forest edges of secondary growth up to 1500m, near water.

Behaviour

Breeding

Both parents build a domed nest with side entrance; it is placed on a sloping bank. The 2 white eggs are incubated for 16-17 days; the young fledge 13-14 days later.

Diet

The diet includes insects, spiders and small invertebrates.
