Identification

21 cm. Green body, olive breast, brown head and neck, red ear patch, blue outer primaries, red wing linings, red sided tail, pale eye ring and bill. Juveniles - paler with no red on head.

Distribution

SE Mexico, Colombia, W Panama and W Ecuador.

Taxonomy

There are 2 subspecies.

Habitat

Frequents forest canopy and edges, adjacent semi-open and tall second growth, avoiding extensive open country.

Behaviour

It nest in an unlined tree cavity and the eggs are white.

The diet includes fruit and seeds.
