Identification

25cm (9¾ in). A dark Cuckoo-shrike.

  • Dark bluish-grey plumage
  • Glossy black narrow forehead band, side of head, chin and throat
  • Black primaries
  • White underwing-coverts
  • Dark eye
  • Black bill, dusky legs

Females and juveniles undescribed.

Similar species

Pygmy Cuckooshrike has white underparts and is much smaller.

Distribution

Endemic to Halmahera in the Northern Moluccas, Indonesia.
Poorly known restricted-range species. Seems to be local and uncommon.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly placed in the genus Coracina, sometimes placed in genus Edolisoma.
Has been treated as subspecies of Sunda Cuckooshrike or Wallacean Cuckooshrike.

Habitat

Primary and selectively logged forest. Occurs at 100 - 900m.
