Identification
16.5 cm
- Dark rufous-brown head, throat and upperparts
- Dark grey chest to crissum, paler on central belly
- Eye dark brown
- Black bill
Distribution
South America: Central Andes of Colombia (from Antioquia south) to north-eastern Ecuador (northwest Sucumbíos)
Taxonomy
This species was found to be embedded into the complex of 15 other species which were previously included in Rufous Antpitta/Chestnut Antpitta.
Subspecies
This is a monotypic species[1]. A second subspecies, romeroana is now considered a synonym of the main taxon.
Habitat
Dense understory of moist montane forests including disturbed areas and second growth. It is found at 1950–3250 m asl.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes insects. It is found on or close to the ground.
Vocalisation
Long song is a series of about 13 notes given over a longer period. The length of each note shortens while the spacing between notes is constant, and the pitch is also constant. The short song consists of a single note of almost a seconds duration.
