Identification
27 cm (10½ in)
Male differ from female mainly in having red malar stripe.
Yellowish-buffy on underside, except for black in throat area and upper breast and unbarred flanks. Upperparts are greyer, strongly barred black except on neck which is prominent as a yellowish ring. Head and distal part of wing brownish to rufous, tail dark.
Juvenile of this form lacks black barring on back and has head except crest blackish connecting down to black on breast (expected in August to October, with an immature observed in January).
Similar species
Rufous-headed Woodpecker has barred flanks and more black on breast.
Distribution
North-central Brazil (Piauí, Tocantins, Maranhão, and Goiás).
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly considerd conspecific with Rufous-headed Woodpecker.
Habitat
Cerrado habitat in Brazil, which is best described as a semi-dry habitat with "grass, savanna, or woodland".
Behaviour
Breeding starts in June-July
