Identification

  • Complex pattern in head and throat area
    • Chestnut cap
    • Narrow orange collar separates cap from back
    • Black stripe across lower face including lower half of eye
    • White stripe above this black stripe
    • Another white stripe below that black stripe, bordered below with a second black stripe that makes a band across lower throat
    • Buffy upper throat and chin
    • White on upper breast just below the lower black band
  • Dark brown upperside with paler markings
  • Graduated tail also dark brown with paler markings
  • Underside buffy with darker barring
  • Stout, short, decurved black bill
  • Black iris and legs

Distribution

South America: found in south-eastern Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, northern Bolivia and western Amazonian Brazil.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1]; subspecies caurensis generally being considered invalid[2].

Habitat

Humid lowland forest near water at forest edges but can also be found in scrubby forest away from water. Is using subcanopy to undergrowth, and sometimes scrub. Usually found below 660 m asl.

Behaviour

Food consists of invertebrates and small vertebrates.

Vocalizations

Usually given at or before dawn.
