Identification
28cm (11-11½ in)
- Dark bluish-green head
- Dark bronze green back, mantle and underparts
- Dark blue wings, rump and tail
- White chin patch
- Pink speckled upper breast
- Pale yellow bill
- Bare pink eye ring
Juvenile
- White eyering
- Brown underparts
Distribution
South America: found in humid forests of north-eastern Colombia, western Venezuela, Ecuador, north-western Peru.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Subspecies cyanescens is generally considered invalid[2].
Habitat
Moist foothill and cloud forests and forest edges. Observed at heights around 1,200-2,400m.
Behaviour
Diet
Very little has been recorded. It is thought they eat the fruits of West Indian elm, seeds and possibly figs too.
Breeding
The nests are placed in tree cavities. The clutch of 3-4 white eggs is incubated by the female for 26 days.
