- Oriolus auratus
Identification
Male: yellow, solid black flight feathers and tail centre, gold wings, which is a distinction from Eurasian Golden Oriole, Oriolus oriolus, which winters in Africa.
Female: drabber, green bird, contrasting wings and black around the eye. The call is a screech like a jay, but the song is a beautiful fluting fee-ooo fee-ooo, unmistakable once heard.
Distribution
Africa south of the Sahara.
Taxonomy
There are two subspecies; Oriolus auratus notatus and Oriolus auratus auratus.
Habitat
Thick bush and other well-wooded areas.
Behaviour
They build a hanging basket-shaped nest in a tree, and 2 eggs are laid.
The diet includes insects and fruit, especially figs.
