Yorkshire Birding (4 Viewers)

For the last week I've been seeing loads of kestrels during my commute to Castleford and Pontefract. Tonight I struck the jackpot with 5 separate birds between the east of Garforth and the A64, all hovering at the side of the road. This after 10 years of logging a drop in their numbers over the same commute.
Anyone else noticing an increase in kestrel numbers?

i was thinking the opposite for me anyway in halifax, not seen an increase rather a decrease, though i have noticed more along the A63 between garforth and selby.

How odd as it's the A63 going towards Leeds from Garforth that is my route and where I see the most birds.

could be the winter we had, kestrel's have been virtually none existent at green withens this year,i had at least 2 pairs breeding in previous years.
i saw 2 hunting together on sunday near south milford and also near eccles on the way home from work on monday

I've noticed a lot round me over the last couple of months - maybe it's a good vole year, although if so it doesn't seem to have attracted many SEOs.

On a completely different subject, I had a wheatear on Stanage Edge this morning - I'm pretty sure that's the latest I've ever seen one.

what are the chances that this is the same bird that took up residence at Pugneys last winter?

It'll be interesting to see if anything else out of the Calder Wetlands duck frenzy from last year also turns up again (Ring-necked Duck, Smew, RB Merganser). It made for an easy mopping up of scarcer ducks for the yearlist last January!

On the bike down Pugneys & Calder Wetlands this afternoon. Fudge still in residence - lake behind Swan & Cygnet. Small number of Redwings at back of Pugneys and a bakers dozen of G Partridge. Also a female Goldeneye on Nature Reserve lake, saw my first of the autumn on Anglers CP last sunday. Pretty quiet (people wise) away from the car park at Pugneys, makes such a difference to birding at the place.

Found a stunning male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker north of Leeds this afternoon which becomes the best bird on the bike list to date. Near continuous scope views for twenty minutes. Made me wish I was a photographer. Also lots of Golden Plover with Lapwings in the fields beyond Eccup, Kingfisher along Adel Beck and a Brambling in Chapel Allerton park. Plenty of Redwings around but no Fieldfares yet.

Graham

Lesser Spotted Woodpecker seems to be really struggling again after it looked like it had turned the corner a few years ago. That's a good record Graham, I bet there aren't that many in the Leeds area this year.

needs some travel info plz lads....

am coming to the goth weekend in whitby and i need to know where the campsite is in the town. Ive been told ther is one near the river, but ive never yet found it....somehwere near the old allotments??

As you probably know its virtually impossible to find b and b over goth weekend, so its park bench or tent tbh (no car). Its hard to stay outside of whitby as we go to the late night music on the thurs/friday at the metropole, so a taxi at 1am will soon make thngs expensive, and am on a budget for the weekend.

Happy to buy a pint if any local birders fancy a chat in the black horse?

Thought the same thing today Keith. 4 separate birds along the A1 between the stretch from about Wetherby to about Pontefract early evening today. Probably the best roadside count on such a short stretch that I can remember in the last 15 years.

This morning on the Birdforum meet at Barmston we had a few good birds. Highlight was a rough-legged buzzard which had a ton of crows on it's backside. Also a short-eared owl, 40+twite in 2 parties, a lone snow bunting, red-throated diver, common scoter, bonxie and purple sandpiper amongst other stuff

There is a backpackers hostel

ill ring em, but i would guess they will be booked up already, it really is very hard to get anything over goth weekend....when you ask in the tourist office they glive you a glance like ur a looney just arrived from mars! most places are booked 6months ahead for goth weekend.

weather forecast isnt too good, not sure i fancy taking the tent, but one step up from park bench like we did last year. My mate nearly killed himself when he sleep walked towards the loo, and fell 3 ft into the empty kids paddling pool and bounced off the bottomn. I think the conctrete came off worse on that exchange tho as goth dave is a little on the rotund side.

Any on the ball birders could make killing renting floor space for the weekend :p

Had my first proper birding trip since moving up to York Uni, went to Spurn with the local RSPB group.

Popped into Holmpton to see if the reported Bluethroat was still around, no sign but a Short-eared Owl there.

Then down to Sammies Point, first time for me there so nice to see the amount of waders there! Grey Plover was a year tick and seeing migrant Tree Sparrows was pretty cool.

Then down to Spurn where a group of birders were assembled on the road side so we pulled over to see that a Pallas's Warbler had just been found there, after waiting about 15mins after getting excited over Goldcrests being elusive several times the Pallas's popped out and showed superbly, stunning bird. A female Bullfinch flew past distantly and was presumably one of the 'Northern' forms.
Driving further down the road saw two Waxwing show superbly in the top of a Hawthorn hedge at the cross roads before flying off. A quick seawatch from near the Bluebell cafe whilst everyone else ate their lunch in the car, saw plenty of Kittiwake moving past and 2 Red-throated Diver. Then Walked around to the listening dish in search of Lapland Buntings, no sign there. Unfourtunatly after hearing that nothing had been seen further down the point the group decided to head to North Cave wetlands, bit frustrating as I would have loved to explore Spurn more and try to find something, but alas it was the groups decision.

Nothing really of note at North Cave but all in all an enjoyable days birding, just a shame that I won't be able to get to Spurn very often without a car!

Welcome to the Yorkshire thread, and glad you enjoyed your initiation into the Spurn experience. Hopefully, you'll find lots more good birds during your stay in the area.

welcome!

Hi Tim

echo the welcomes , there are at least 2 birders in York who go on Tyke forum meets ,u have just missed the last one but check community section for info/report. Knocker7800 (Mark) and myself regularly car share so should be no probs to pick u up

Well,I've been for a walk round my local patch today-nothing out of the ordinary,3 buzzards,3 red kite, at least 3 kestrel ,and a near miss with a sparrowhawk trying to avoid the local rooks.Plenty of fieldfares, and the goldfinch are really flocking together in their favourite hotspot.Came across a small flock of yellowhammers and tree sparrows(but ts are always on my feeders) and spent 15 minutes watching a stoat trying to catch a late lunch-an afternoon well spent.
On the subject of kestrels;I had chat with my friend Archie who's a bit of a hawk watcher and we don't think there's been any decline in any of the places we visit, but there are increasing numbers of buzzards and the kites are spreading well.We saw 2 up near Borobridge last week.
