The 'White' Red Kite (1 Viewer)

WHIMBREL

A lifelong Naturalist...
I'm posting this photograph of a 'White' Red Kite, I took it earlier this week at the Red Kite Feeding Station at Gigrin Farm, near Rhayader, in Mid Wales.

These incredible birds have through the years attained a mythical status in Wales my homeland, when I was growing up (a long time back now!) we could only dream of actually seeing a Red Kite they were that scarce, but over the years rumour persisted that a 'White' Red Kite existed in the secluded hidden valleys of Mid Wales. You can therefore only imagine my delight as a life long naturalist to actually see (and photograph one) in the flesh.

As a Welshman I am fiercely protective, and hugely proud of our national Welsh bird, and I applaud the efforts of the Powell family and the wonderful work they and the Welsh Kite Trust have done to preserve and safeguard our living national treasures. The Gigrin Kites are 'real' native Welsh Kites, not introductions from continental stock, such as those that occur in other parts of the British Isles.

You may just make out the wing tags on this beautiful bird, the left wing has a black tag showing it's region of hatch was Wales, while the right wing has either a red tag meaning a 2003 hatch or possibly orange 2005 (my eyes are not that sure!!)...what do you think?

I was informed by a local birder (another Bird Forumer) that over the years, and since their numbers have increased several birds have inherited the white gene traits that this bird shows. However I'm also informed that the other Red Kites don't seem to tolerate it that well. My own observations seemed to indicate that the bird stay's on the periphery of the feeding area, only making brief forays for food, and totally disappearing for long periods, such behavior makes getting a good photograph a bit of a task or luck, however this image is a reasonable record shot.

Please visit the Welsh Kite Trust's website or the excellent Gigrin Farm, Red Kite Feeding and Rehabilitation Centre to find out more about our Welsh national bird.

Hoping you'll all enjoy this superb bird.

Bill

Hello Whimbrel

I've seen the White Kite mentioned on Gigrin Farm's website before. I'm glad to see it's still around as I intend to visit Gigrin Farm the week after next at some point. Do you know if it's a regular visitor to the feeding station?

Richard

Hi there Richard,

That's the type of question you may be better advised to ask Chris Powell at Gigrin, he is usually most helpful with Red Kite queries via Email - see the Gigrin website for details.

You will have a fascinating visit, particularily if you have not been before.

Bill

Thanks Bill, I might just get in touch with them!

I've never visited Gigrin before. I've noticed another Red Kite feeding station at Bwlch Nant Yr Arian, over towards Aberystwyth.

Its been a long time since I did any birding in mid Wales. In 1991 I visited the Elan Valley and Cors Caron (Tregaron Bog). I saw a few back then. There must have been around only 60 pairs of Red Kites back then! I think Tregaron rubbish dump was one of the most reliable places to see them. Not that I needed to visit there thankfully, and I'm glad I don't have to do that now! Just shows you how successful their increase has been.

There was a white kite regular at Nant yr Arian when I was living in the area a few years back, don't know if it's still about.

Richard,

Gigrin is barely 4 miles from the Elan Valley, if you visit the whole area is excellent for Peregrine, Merlin, Ring Ouzel etc, as well as our wonderful Red Kites, and there is always the added beauty of the Elan Valley dams and the surrounding countryside...lovely stuff!!!

Best Wishes,

Bill

PS. Obviously Ring Ouzel in season.

The white kite has headed north to Dumfries and Galloway. It's been seen at the loch ken feeding station. It's there with another kite tagged in wales. It's about this time of year that kites disperse from their winter roosts.

Yes it's a lovely bird, I've seen it at Gigrin a few times. =) Really striking amongst the other birds, though as you mentioned the other Kites don't particularly like it.

Took this picture in Nov 2006 at Gigrin farm of the kite in question.Id say its an orange tag.I last went there in Nov 2007 and it was still there then, but it comes down late to feed.Best to wait til nearly everyone has left, all the kites come down then.

James S,

Yes it's an Orange tag numbered 51, which obviously helps ringers recognise the individual kite for recording and information on movement etc.

Three leucistic birds (the correct term for white phase birds) have been recorded from this area of Mid Wales more recently, whether 'your' bird is the same as 'my' bird is uncertain. I've officially claimed adoption rights on 'my' bird...;)

Best Wishes,

Bill.

White*Kite - what a brilliant user name, now this emphatically proves there is definately more than just 'my' White Kite...:t:

Regards,

Bill

I visited Gigrin Farm on Tuesday. Unfortunately no sign of the White Kite then, but I wasn't too disappointed. What a spectacle it is!

One was seen in the Chilterns village of Hambleden 2 years ago following an autumn plough with another 40 RED kites and several buzzards , hung around for about another 2 days then flew off , although to where , who knows ...unlikely to have come from Wales though

Richard,

Glad you made it to Gigrin Farm and enjoyed the wonderful spectacle, the Red Kites are simply magical birds...|=)|

Best Wishes,

Bill

I would encourage anyone to report their positive i.d. sightings of kites. It is always helpful and interesting for the monitors. The wingtags provide information such as the age of the bird, and where they originated. Further info on how to read wing tags can be found on the website below.
