Red Kites (1 Viewer)

Hello. I am 90 years old and not able to get about like I used to, married and live in Lancashire, Cleverleys area. Have many years of bird watching behind me, no expert, but an overwhelming love of birds, from Sparrows to Red Kites. I lived in Mid Wales running a pony trekking centre in the late 60’s when the last two pairs of Kites led a fragile existence near Tregaron. Worked for the RSPB, protecting Peregrines, and helping in a feeding experiment to attract Kites in that area which led to the present wide distribution of this wonderful bird.
I love this site and admire the incredible expertise of the birders that use it. Brian Conn

Hi Brian and a very warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I used to run a pony trekking centre here in Scotland! There were no Red Kites here in those days. However, since a few re-introduction projects started, I now see one most days, at least in the summer. Such beautiful birds to watch.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing about the birds you see around you.

Welcome Brian, what a small World, I live just up the road from you. I love Red Kites too, all birds in fact, my best experiences of them being in mid Wales. Here is one of my photos of a RK in flight, I have many more.

Thanks so much Chris. Wonderful photo! We used to get them just over our house near, Maesglas Tregaron, in the late 60’s, a long time ago. Now live under some trees, home of a family of Tawney Owls, so still in contact.

Thanks so much Delia. What an early coincidence! Miss riding and those wonderful days on the Welsh hills.

Oh WOW! very nice if you have Tawny owls in your garden, we get lots of small birds and a pair of Sparrowhawks in ours, but never owls. Great to hear! :) (y)

Hi Chris. Sparrowhawkes! Great! Wyre Council have just placed a tree preservation order on a small parcel of trees at the back of us where the Tawny owls are, bordering the Fleetwood Branch Line. We are hoping that it will become permanent. Have joined the local railway preservation Society, hoping I might be able to do some bird watching along the line. It would make a marvellous nature trail, a green highway from Poulton to Fleetwood.

Ah right Brian, I have actually walked down a section of that branch line earlier this year, accessed from a place called Burglars Alley, interesting indeed.

Hi Brian, welcome to the forum. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group.
