The last post... (1 Viewer)

My deepest condolences to Richard family in this time of loss. Richard was the driving force behind this forum, and without him I doubt this forum would have become one of the premiere places to learn of new studies of bird taxonomy and evolution. Practically every ornithologist interested in taxonomy I know visits this forum, and no doubt many of Richard's informative posts have inspired new research. He will be greatly missed here.

Erica and family,
My sincere condolences to all of you. Richard meant a lot to the forum members, his work on our taxonomy pages helped to make the forum what it is today. We will miss him and his contributions to the forum.

Hi Erica. I can't add any more... so so sorry.

I propose that this forum is re-named after Richard as a way of recognising his love of the subject and his huge input into establishing this as such a successful and informative forum. What do others think?

All the best

Pete

I think that's a great idea, Pete.

That sounds like a great idea! There are a lot of great contributors to this forum, but it was the quality of Richard's input and his class that really elevated it to being the best source of info on bird taxonomy on the web.

I was thinking exactly the same - Richard not only was a key contributor to this area of the forum, but was extremely helpful in answering enquiries via PM, etc, on the subject. I think it would be a fitting gesture for Bird Forum to name in honour of Richard.

I think it is a very bad idea.

The present name of the forum tells us and new members what the forum is all about, a new name, not even Richards name, can not say anything to new members and to name a forum after a person can not cover the subject of that forum.

I'd sort of assumed that the idea was to call this forum something like 'The Richard Klim Bird Taxonomy and Nomenclature Forum', which I think would be a good idea and would make it clear to new members what the forum was about.

I do see how the naming of an internet forum after an individual, however worthy, could be a bit awkward as a precedent for some.

At the least could this thread be made a 'sticky', or would that be inappropriate?

Exactly what I was thinking Andrew - of course the subject would still be obvious.

Cheers

I agree the present name should stay but I think it should also have a dedication for Richard.

Pete,

I agree entirely and would like to add my condolences to Richard's family.

I never met Richard but his patience, helpfulness and politeness shown here were second to none and a model for others.

There were few publications or decisions which escaped his eagle eye as a review of almost any of the threads within this Forum will testify. The number of times which I clicked on a link supplied by Richard must number many hundreds.

The Richard Klim Taxonomy Forum gets my full support.

I should say that I don't really see any problem with re-naming as such myself - if it's good enough a concept for the real world it's good enough for here certainly, in fact I think it is a good idea tbh. (Of course a re-naming discussion on here has a certain humorous irony that shouldn't escape us ... ;) )
