Sandwell Valley (17 Viewers)

Hope you are enjoying these little anecdotes, if not tell me and I'll stop them, not much info about birds granted...but...still valley related and makes a change from all those boring counts/statistics that appear to be dominant on the forum, Yep its great to know whats about but the forum is to discusss all things Bird/Birdwatching/Birding related so I think some readers will appreciate my little ditties, I'm sure you all have something you wish to share, so C'mon Guys and gals lets rock together, Remember we don't have Nancy's cafe anymore and the CB's , we've all moved on but with modern technology has come less need to communicate on a personal level, As a radio Amateur I passed my exams at Dudley College in 1992 after 3 years of hard study , It was great when I bought my first radio, when members of the West Bromwich Central Radio club would come down to the reserve and set up two antenna, one at each end of the building, one for UHF/VHF and the other for HF, It was 9th/10th October 1993, World Birdwatch Weekend , The idea was that we could provide live radio links with other radio clubs around the UK and the World who were set up at Other Bird reserves and we could exchange greetings and other sightings, being newly licensed I couldn't wait to get on the HF radio and my first contact was to a fellow Birder/HAM in the Netherlands, we had many fine contacts that day , As a radio club we enjoyed it immensly, thanking the RSPB for their invite but most of all the looks on the kids faces to see us taliking into the mics and talking all over the world and letting them have a go , so whats the point of all this, well Back in Cley and the Scillies and many other places the birders used to use CB and maybe they still do, but nowadays its Facebook, Twitter, using our mobiles, tablets etc, without even batting an eyelid ,Technology as moved on a pace but is it still as exciting, maybe for the youngsters it's not, after all they have all grown up with the gadgetry but I sometimes think that having to run back to the centre from around the other side of the lake or Swan pool to report a good un' was an integral part of the fun, radios I still use them for mainly chatting around the midlands but the magic has gone somewhat when you can just pick up a mobile and know your message or bird sighting can be on the web or hotlines in seconds...You young birders just think how lucky you all are
In memory of the valleys greatest Birder ( My own Opinion ) John F Fortey

Think I'll do Sheepwash Tomorrow, It's been such a long time, Last time I went around was to find all the Geocaches, But someone as posted some good pergerine photos on the sheepwash post on the "Stack ", not sure where that is but I'm thinking it may be on the other side of the railway, but should soon find it, Sorry Off topic, not valley related, well I need two more birds to push me past my best ever year count for the valley, not highly impressive but worthy of mention, anyway where have all the posters gone off here it seems that if it wasn't for YamYam then it would be dying a death, I will have to start putting in an appearance more often, I need to get down the valley every day, Who know's I may be able to report in the future that I have got the highest valley list consistently through the year, but it won't be this year as it is September already, but maybe a project for next year, who knows ?.
I suspect there are more readers than posters, so to encourage you all to fledge the nest and join the big wide world, Question ?, What is the best bird you think you have ever seen in the valley and why ?, Mine I think must be the Pectoral Sandpiper, 29th September 1984, Just popped down the valley for a quick look around and the Sandpiper was in the muddy sandy shallows where the RSPB's Island is now, the excavators had just left and they had just finished profiling the banks ready to fill the lake with water, with only small pockets of water around, perfect wader territory, several people saw the bird , at that time I had only been birding in the valley for 5 years or so and i think that must have been my one and only "Mega" for the valley, I'm sure many of you have seen many fine birds of your own in the valley over the years, why not share some with us , who knows it could be a very useful exercise
Mike

Be sure to post any observations on the Sheepwash thread

Scusi Yam Yam, You know who I am I'm sure and if I can manage to post maybe 5 posts a day I may catch you up in two years, Are you going to share your thougts with fellow posters about your recent italian/Sicilian Trip, it would be good to hear about the places you visited and most importantly the birds you have seen, birds that occur in the Sandwell Valley and birds that never have, Chow

Hi Sedgley Birder
Yes Of course i will, Due to disability I tend to carry a Canon Bridge Camera around with me these days It's a Canon SX50HS and as a equivalent zoom of 1200mm , Went down the Valley on Saturday Afternoon looking for the reported Little Egret, had seen it a few weeks back but only had a Canon DSLR with a 70-300mm lens so I thought this time I would stand a better chabce of a photo with the Bridge camera, alas i could not find it, but I always use the camera for nature on the sports setting, multiple frames, and in about an hour I shot approx 160 images and it was only whilst looking through them on the PC I noticed I had a pair of snipe on the shoreline, so sometimes a camera can be better, but yes I will take a look , I can only get out birding when the wife drives me there and tomorrow she is free, we were going to park on Wilko's car park, do you know of anywhere nearer please
Thanks
Mike
