Osprey Sighting in the UK (1 Viewer)

Someone claimed to of seen one on the 2nd March on BirdDiary. It was in Leicester and he said he was 100% certain it was an Osprey. Personally I am sceptical of the Leicester report, it was probably just a pale Buzzard, but it is certainly possible that the Northamptonshire report could be true. Although I would expect not to see them until April everything is arriving earlier these days.

A bird appeared back on its nest site in the North of Scotland by the 25th of March a few years ago. So the Northamptonshire sighting is a good possibility. I hope so as I am looking forward to the birds comming back.

Earlier Cambs sighting 9/3

From Cambirds, Mike Everett:

Big surprise while leaving the A14 towards Godmanchester this a.m. -
an Osprey flew over from the Cow Lane direction and disappeared roughly
towards the Offords/Buckden etc.. An exceptionally early date. Perhaps
you Grafhamites should keep your eyes peeled!

I read, last fall I believe, that a purple martin had been spotted in Wales or England so I guess it is possible that an osprey might appear as well. I live in Delaware, USA and ospreys (fish eagles) are very common here around The Chesapeake Bay (in Maryland) and our smaller bays here in Delaware. We also have a condo in South Florida and I noticed this winter that a pair of ospreys has taken up residence on the rooftop of our 9 story building and feeds on fish in the canal and lake. So much fun to watch the birds swoop down and grab a meal from the water.

I thought the Purple Martin was seen on the Outer Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland.

Two male Ospreys from the introduction scheme at Rutland Water in the English midlands paired up with unringed females in Wales last year.

Carl,

I don't know if you knew this already, Ospreys resumed breeding in Scotland in the 1950s so there is a good chance they would be seen on migration to and from there in Wales and England since that time.

There was an Osprey close to Sutton Coldfield last Saturday morning - around 9.30am. I was driving in traffic and could not stop, so am not able to offer any further details.

Osprey at Rutland Water 23/3

From the Rutland Ospreys web site:
http://www.ospreys.org.uk/AWOP/Update.htm

One Osprey here - 23rd March

At 3:45 this afternoon as members of the team approached the nest where
breeding has occurred since 2001, John Wright saw an Osprey dropping
down and landing on the nest for about a minute before flying away
towards the reservoir. Could it have been 03(97) back for another year?
It was certainly a male. Tim Mackrill next picked up the bird as it was
looking for fish along the north shore of the reservoir and it then flew
off towards the dam. With cold strong easterly winds it was clearly
having trouble finding fish near the surface
There were no further sightings this evening - though it was not for
the want of trying! As darkness fell the bird had not returned to the
nest site. So was it 03(97)?... or one of the other Rutland males?... or
a migrant bird on its way further north?

Perhaps we shall know tomorrow.
