Nottinghamshire Birding (5 Viewers)

Great White Egret

I saw the attached at Hoveringham a week last Friday and a birder from Coalville gave me a confirmed sighting yesterday (Sat 13th March) in the same area near Coneygre Farm (go to sailing lake, take footpath/green lane towards Gibsmere and at the end of the first field scan the dykes either side of the green lane).

Cheers........Roger

How do? Could anyone tell me if Budby Common still gets Woodlark? A what time of year they return and best areas to see them? Cheers

I've been to Budby twice since mid Feb and only very briefly heard a single bird on both occasions. Numbers seem to have dwindled in the last few years - there were much fewer last year then the years before.

No Stonechats either.

Still there Dan. Me & Steve had prolonged, if distant, views this afternoon. Loads of Common Buzzards in the area, including one with a very pale patch on its rump, so beware! Red Kite also present.

Mike

Thanks Mike - any thoughts on best place to view from? Its still being reported today.

Hi Dan

Sorry, i missed this post yesterday.

If you look at a map, the villages of Newton and Haceby are on a loop of road to the south of the A52. We first saw the RLB from the pull off at the SW corner of this loop, looking eastwards. We then saw it from opposite the Old Post House in Newton, looking back towards the A52. Both of these sopts offer decent vantage points to scour the surrounding area.

Not reported today, but you've got to wonder how many people are looking for it! It may well still be there.

Give me a call if you want any more info, i've got a new number - i'll PM you.

Cheers

Mike

A couple of hours on the patch before work and I finally found the leucistic male Pheasant some of the locals residents have told me of... either it's survived for at least two years or there's been a couple in the area. Flock of c.1000 Golden Plover in the fields and over Lakeside Restaurant (Bestwood Pumping Station) with a Peregrine hunting them.

Peregrine

Heard and then saw a Peregrine in Nottingham city centre for the first time in ages this morning, had wondered if all the building works around the Newton building had scared them off but apparently not.

As a birding Notts County season-ticket holder, I can confirm that twice this season, a Peregrine has been circling the ground at Meadow Lane (no rude comments please !).

Previously, it was during a match - but last Saturday it was around 2.30pm - when it then drifted off high over London Road towards the city centre.

So, one or more "alive and well" hopefully.

Cheers

Two oyster catchers down at Holme Pierrepont this afternoon - not sure I've ever seen them there before. Is it normal this far inland? Only ever seen them on the coast before.

Yes some come inland in summer to breed, they normally start to arrive late Feb.

Building works did seem make them scarcer for a while, but 1-3 present through 2nd half of last year and 2 most days this winter. Seeing them in flight is much better than on the buildings though, and I rarely see them in flight. Probably only 2-3 times in over 150 city sightings have I seen them in flight - usually after the pigeons... and once from the office window.:t:

A Peregrine again appeared at Meadow Lane during a match last week. On Tuesday evening midway through the first half (about 8.10pm) of the game against Lincoln, the bird was very visible in the floodlights and obviously not spooked by a very decent crowd (for us anyway !)

"Pigeon-spotting" presumably, first of all it flew underneath the eaves of the Pavis Stand and then quickly emerged to fly towards us all in the Kop Stand.

After a quick swoop under the overhanging roof directly above myself and the two other birding Notts County fans I sit with, it flew off pigeonless over the cattle market - and back towards the city centre.

Cheers

Hi Andy,

As a Notts season ticket holder for the last three seasons before this one I'd have killed for a bit of excitement off the pitch but I'd have thought the magnificent magpies were more than enough to keep you entertained this season.

I'm off to Meadow Lane tonight for my first home match of the season so I'll keep my eyes peeled for the peregrine if it returns.

Cheers,
Chris

Given the decent sightings (9 Ring Ouzels today) coming from Annesley Pit Top I should really find out where this site is. Can anyone advise on parking and where to go once I get there?

Notts Birders site doesn't have much apart from suggesting parking at the Station.

Cheers,
Chris

Finished work early today to check out some news from my mate of Yellow Wagtail and Wheatear on the local patch - both patch ticks for me. Got a single female Wheatear and 9 Yellow Wagtail with a similar number of Pied Wagtail. 2 Common Buzzard went over and were then mobbed by the Yellow Wagtails, before a crow joined in. A Red Kite was seen in the same area yesterday morning.
