Interesting to see he rates the Pentax 100mm Scope. These are on offer in Japan at the moment (secondhand) for 90,000 yen (about $750).

I already have the Pentax 65mm Scope and like it but what's putting me off the 100mm one is that there is no angled version. With such a huge and heavy Scope you'd need a huge and heavy tripod to go with it. At least with an angled you don't need to use the central column so can get away with a lighter less heavy duty tripod.

I think birders have quite different demands. But, i do like the "strange" site. Thanks for the post.

Spotting bullet holes in targets at these ranges takes a VERY good scope and the same scope would work very well for seeing details in birds,brick walls,landscape etc.

I don't think the shooters are bothered about colour fidelity; birders are. Interesting review of zooms by Henry Link last night. The Zeiss zoom took a bit of tonking. I daren't say it was blown out of the water...

At least we know why the Zeiss is 85mm, now. Everyone knows it has a slightly yellow hue - it's designed that way to help cut through haze; you couldn't do that without reducing light transmission.

Canaries look good through it!

Looking at bullet holes is hardly going to tell you anything of colour rendition etc IMO. The review also lacked the Leica and Kowa scopes so was hardly wide ranging.

Believe me the 100mm Pentax is a great scope .I have just been watching a red tail hawk about 400 yds away using a 8.5 pentax eye piece .
I dont believe any other scope could give me a better view.
A bit big to carry around but i have it on my back deck on bogen 3046 tripod with 501 head .Its a real nice set up .
I also have a cheap daisy airgun red dot sight [$8] mounted on it to aid in sighting.

Brian,I think this is a little bit of prejudice against the use of bullet holes to judge a spotter and if people don't like the review they don't have to read it right.Anybody that has ever tried to see bullet holes at these ranges knows it takes a very very good scope to see them.If a spotter can bring to focus to see this, the colors come along with it.That is to see detail on a bird etc.They do say in the article that the Swarovski came in a very close second with the Zeiss[Outdoor Life review said the same thing].I am sure they will post more information at a later date.

Steve a lot of people seem to believe it must be european to be the best .
They used to say the same about cameras cars & motorcycles.
But look now .
I think that if the pentax scopes were more available in europe there would be many more people there using them .
They are a bargain compared to the others .They even come with a pretty decent case .Not like the over priced ones from other manufacturers.
In case people think i,m biased i do have swaro & leica stuff also .
