in and around south tyneside (4 Viewers)

Can I just say thanks to Dougie and Derek for finding the Eastern Crowned Warbler and to Mark for drawing our attention to it. I was fortunate enough to enjoy good views of this bird and the Yellow-browed Warbler on Friday. On Thursday my parents were asking me if the internet had made an impact on seeing birds in this country and elsewhere. This is a classic example of the positive side of the internet. Not only do many people get the chance to enjoy this bird, but Dougie and Derek get two new birds not one:)

What, with all the excitement we've taken our eye off the ball a bit. We seem to have stalled on the plans for tomorrow.
I know Steve and Ross are still up for Holy Island, I hope others are too. Some canny birds been reported this week!
See you all tomorrow

Mick

just had a fone call regarding the tide, from a mate that lives up there, if tide is 3.9 or lower, you can (unofficially) cross approximately half an hour beforehand. (as the tide is on it's way OUT, should be okeedokee)

(not with a car full of famous birders tho!!!!)

Holy Island Crossing times

Safe crossing times tomorrow for Holy Island are 09.20 until 17.40.

I think I will stick with the official times rather than risk the embarassment of getting stuck on the way across - plus a hefty repair bill for the car.:eek!:

Don't forget the clocks go back tonight so if you get it wrong you might be standing waiting in the cold for an hour until transport arrives:t::-O:-O

Yes I was one of them!! I hate getting wet due to the fact I'm a wimp. Sat in my car for an hour while it rained lightly, weather forcast promised it would brighten up at 3 so at 3.30 when it stopped I jumped out of the car and skipped merrily to a good spot. (for some reason I was up on the top by myself) Saw some fantastic views of said warbler but got absolutley soaked as the rain deceided to have a last hurrah and lashed it down. Still for the views it was worth it.

Enjoy tomorrow hope you all have a grand day out and don't forget the wensleydale. Don't expect too much from Doug and Derek I think they have earned a rest (and everlasting gratitude) after their find this week.

PS Derek, are you going? If so I’ll let the press etc know in advance, because there will no doubt be a couple more megas turn up. What, with that serendipitous streak of yours and all ;);)

Hiya Mick - was thinking about going up there tomorrow, but arranged to meet up with Michael Eccles - dunno where our travels will take us, but i doubt butterflies and dragonflies will feature much :-O:-O

Dipped on Segg's Trowl this afternoon, but all was not lost . . .

Havnt been at a twitch for a long time & almost didnt go through.
Glad to have done so, the photos just dont do it justice - a very striking bird.
Reminiscent of an "Arctic Yellow-browed Wood Warbler Vireo" ;)

It was still feeding well, taking a hatch of flies on the wing as the light was going at ten past six this evening !

A fortuitous phone call meant i picked up Mick.H, who had just, also fortuitously missed his bus home. We enjoyed the scene & pondered on who had come the furthest . . .

A guy i recognised from Stockton rushed up next to us after 5 o'clock puffing & panting. . .
He seemed slightly anxious, then after he'd had an eyeful, he explained he'd come off the Scilly islands & had been driving flat out since ten this morning !

As if that wasnt impressive enough - what about those 2 French lads, who'd come from The Azores !!
. . . with a bit of encouragement from a Northumbrian contingent i think they were considering going back to France on a Ship via the Black Throated Accentor in Sweden ! :eek!:

Really enjoyable couple of hours - i'll never call Twitchers (or South Tynesiders) rude names again.
;)
