in and around south tyneside (4 Viewers)

Based on the fact that Dougie and i saw what we thought were 2 YBW's yesterday (obviously one of which was the ECW) - would it be feasible that i add a YBW to my list as well - plenty people saw one today so i assume that was the second bird we saw....

Is it best viewed from bottom of quarry or top, will be there first thing tomorrow.
Views are split on this option Davy...depends on the bird.:-O
I never viewed from the cliff area today but still got good views from the bottom grassed area..But quite a few people seemed to pick the bird up quicker from the cliff section.
The bird seems to have a feeding circuit and interacts with the YBW. now and then, the pair of Blackcaps also here.

I would say that you pays your money and you takes your choice.

I was on the cliff (at a reasonable distance, of course) and saw the bird at closish range (but still it awkwardly hidden amongst the leaves), but often we were only alerted to the bird's presence by the birders lower down getting onto it first and we noticed that it was showing again by their activity.

Hi Folks,:t:

Was up at 4.45 this morning as I can’t seem to sleep just lately (wonder why!;)) I think I’m just totally overawed by the impact this find has had on the birding world, my local patch, and our thread – Brilliant!

Yesterday was absolute madness from start to finish, hundreds of birders from far and wide descending on Trow, the phones (house & mobile) just didn’t stop ringing all day, I even had a visit from the national press – unbelievable!:eek!:

I’ve thought a lot about Thursdays ‘find’ and obviously Derek and I played a big part in this, but if we’re honest we had no idea what it was we’d discovered…. so with this in mind I’d like to say a massive thanks to Mark Newsome for his superb identification skills because without his expertise this bird would have just flew south as another Yellow Browed Warbler – well done mate, it’s your bird as much as ours!:t:

I had never even heard of an Eastern Crowned Warbler and couldn’t find reference to it in any of my many bird books; however it’s not a bird I’m likely to forget in a hurry!:-O

Thanks to everyone for the pm’s, texts and emails – I’m just so pleased the bird showed well yesterday and the ‘twitch’ was worthwhile.

Best wishes ‘one and all’

Cheers, Dougie.

Amazing :t: - still present this morning as per RBA:

Co.Durham: EASTERN CROWNED WARBLER still 8.26am South Shields E of A183 Coast Road on The Leas in Trow Quarry + Yellow Browed Warbler. Park along A183 or in pay & display car park N of Trow Lea + view trees at S end of quarry from a sensible distance.

Well done Echo et al. B :)

Leas

Quiet walk along the Leas this morning, 2 fem Reed Buntings and a male Stonechat on the mound but not much else. Seemed to be something going on down in trow and judging by the big lenses and cameras flashing and a comment from a guy coming away from the throng saying there was a mega bird down there I thought it must be Jordan so stayed away.

Hope I didn't miss out.;)

What, with all the excitement we've taken our eye off the ball a bit. We seem to have stalled on the plans for tomorrow.
I know Steve and Ross are still up for Holy Island, I hope others are too. Some canny birds been reported this week!
See you all tomorrow

Mick

PS Derek, are you going? If so I’ll let the press etc know in advance, because there will no doubt be a couple more megas turn up. What, with that serendipitous streak of yours and all ;);)

Having been stuck at work yesterday, I was down at Trow for first light today and spent about three hours getting occasionally excellent scope views of the Eastern Crowned Warbler and the Yellow-browed. I viewed from the top of the quarry, on the western side.

Just wanted to say a big well done and thanks to Dougie, Derek and Mark. Due to personal circumstances I haven't done much birding this year and have really just started again, so this was a great way to kick things off.

The Sunderland Echo is carrying the story today. Another one for Dougie's ever-expanding scrapbook.:t: Here is the web link for anyone interested:

Thanks again, lads.

BBC News24 featured the bird at lunchtime today and the story is 'going national' on BBC1 on the teatime news.
At least the BBC should do some good coverage, not like the embarassing radio Newcastle interviews yesterday. I'm surprised no-one told the interviewer to f*** off. Imagine asking questions like "I've heard that this bird warbles a lot, can you do an impression?" and "Have you ever given a dying rare bird resuscitation to keep it alive so you can tick it?" Totally cringe worthy.

What's the transport arrangements for tomorrow?
