Gwent birding (1 Viewer)

Nice one Mike.

The young and the parents were flying on the bottom path over Newtown last night and perching up in easy locations for shots (well for you anyone!) Stood on a few different spots to watch them being fed and then flying about and with the wind about last night I thought it was one of them chances you could have had a good go at it - if you carried the camera...whcih I didnt :-O

I noticed them over there the other evening Al.I may pop over there in the week if I get time.

Dear Welsh birdwatchers

I will be on short holiday in Cardiff in july and would like to see these species (I've never seen before):

Egyptian Goose
Golden Pheasant
Lady Amherst’s Pheasant
Mediterranean Gull
Barn Owl
Little Owl
Red Kite
(Dartford Warbler)
(Stone Curlew)

Do you have any ideas for locations in/or near Cardiff for any of these birds?

Cheers and Thanks!

Black Redstart

Came across this beauty this morning whilst out with the Dog.I wont put the exact location here due to the sensitive nature of the species and the time of year as it shouldnt really be here.It was taken in North Gwent though and he was singing and hanging around a small area but didnt see any female or juveniles.

Nice photo's mike well done on your find:t:

Cracking shots Mike.

Nothing as grand for me but less than 5 mins ago had a garden visitor that gave me a buzz. Stood in the kitchen chatting to the wife and there was a number of birds on the feeder (golfinch, greenfinch n G Tits) and as I stood by ther patio door turned to watch them - they scattered in all directions....then noticed the sparrowhawk swoop right low over the garden !! I think I have had one here previously but not sure...this was a deffo spot though...and although he didn't land its now on my list as 2 ft above the feeder counts as a garden tick I reckon !! :t:

Have had collared dove and jackdaw on there this morning too..he might have had a better chance with them..now wouldn't that be nice :)

Cardi this morning had a bout 30-40 goldies feeding on thistle on the waste ground between the woods n KFC.

Lovely shots Mike. I was only thinking of you this afternoon and was considering popping up to the hide area some time in the summer months.

Hope you are all well.

Lots of garden birds in today...Goldies n Greenfinch adults n juveniles, lots of great tits, welcome return to a apir of coal tits plus mr & mrs bullfinch who have been in a few times. Collared dove, magpie, jackdaw...strangely no blue tits and they nested in the house too.

I hope the sparrowhawk got his eyes on the place :-O

Thurs 8th July 2010 - Newtown

Lots of birds, butterflies and even a few dragonflies over there this morning....at least 5 whitethroat between the car n bottchers, wren, linnet, greenfinch, great tit, goldfinch... song thrush sat on the post waiting for a picture...arrrgh no camera innit....on my circuit bet I saw at least 4 song thrush too...was saying to someone the other day - they seem to be about a lot this year at locations I have been...anyone else say the same? Blackbirds, swallows and nice view of a stonchat.....the feeder level saw 2 mallards on the bit of water that has gathered there...3 - 4 m pipits but highlight of the walk today was seeing three green woodpeckers on a post...watched two fly onto the post and then another joined them before they quickly disappeared.

Hiya John.

You are very welcome mate but its very quiet at the moment.I was there for an hour yesterday morning and saw zilch. Its like that in the Summer as there is so much natural food around.

Caught up with that Black Redstart again this morning and he has popped over to Breconshire for a bit.Lets hope its just for a short break eh ;).

Chris Packham in Monmouth was an embarrassing shambles. He had some superb pictures and the techies couldn't work the projector. What a mess!

Thats a shame Steve,it sounds like it would have been a good night.

If you ever get a chance go to one of Andy Rouse`s shows.I went to the one in Cardiff a few months back and really enjoyed it.

Garden tick - Bastille day

Was making a cuppa this mornind and saw a couple of birds flitting in n out of the garden...think I said to Mike the other day I have had a willow warbler in n out of th place...run up n got the camera but it had gone and then saw 3 on the far fence ! Have been hearing them singing out the back for ages but not in the last 2 weeks...I would think this is a youngster...sorry about the crap copy but it was through a dirty window etc etc...couple of cxollared doves on the feeder at the time.

Been doing my annual Peregrine monitoring this season and to be honest its been a bit of a dissapointment.Of all the sites I watch only two have actually been successful this year for reasons unknown. There are adult birds at all the sites its just for some reason they havent bred.
One pair have had a particularly late brood this year with the chicks only fledging this week. They normally take their first flight in the beginning of June but its probably down to the late Winter we had.
Went to check on them today and good to see all three healthy especially after the wind and rain this week.
