Gwent birding (2 Viewers)

Walking the dog down the hill tonight about 8.30pm and a Barn Owl flew in front of me from the football ground towards the trees at the top end of the Cardiff.

Mike and Gary: I noticed a few of your pics in the newspaper this morning! Makes a change from wildlife photography.

Nice find Alan, its been a while since i have seen a barn owl up that way.

no sign of the black redstart early this afternoon so went over to Garnlydan Reservoir which was also very quiet with only 1 Red kite, a few buzzards and ravens, 1 kestrel which caught a vole, 2 stonechat, and usual mipits and gulls.

pic 1: a mipit
Pic 2: kessy in action!

i was using a canon 400mm prime 5.6. I am only having a lend but will hopefully have my 100-400 IS soon!!!

Good choice!
Just a reminder folks I read in the Gazette today that Iolos Welsh Safari is back on next week (Tuesday or Wednesday).First show is from the Brecon Beacons.

Oh well back to rubbish weather which means newport wetlands will be on hold for now. I hate the place in the rain as there is no shelter what so ever! Every person i speak to there says about hides! So as usual, i have sent yet another e-mail to the RSPB expressing my feelings and i do this every time i was going down but didnt because of the rain. They might get the message soon?

With them spending 3.2 million on a visitor centre you would think they could spare a few thousand for a few hides!!!

Another crazy day in blaenau gwent as a manx shearwater was found in a beaufort garden!!! i had a phonecall from a local birder who was approached and asked what it was. so i went down to the owl sanctuary which was where it was and saw it. I could not believe it! i was quite tempted to go up to garnlydan reservoir this evening and try and find a few auks, skuas and maybe a sooty or great shearwater gliding across the waves, but it raining!!

It's amazing what can turn up!
I remember the last Manx being found in Gilwern about 25yrs ago........got to go think I just heard a Snowy Owl!

All has gone quiet! a tour around the local 'hotspots' (well not quite) and only saw a few mipits, and 3 ravens! The wind is really strong. Oh and i saw a mallard, how could i forget that!

Also, Is the date of the next birders night OK? my e-mail isn't working so i dont know whos e-mailed me to confirm, its on the 26th Oct.

The 26th is OK for me Luke but I did send you an e-mail saying to leave it for the original date as more people seem to be able to go! I don't mind if I miss a night and to be honest Fridays are always difficult because of camera club. Anyway I'll leave it up to you!
Gary

Ok, we could make it the original date. but could someone send an e-mail to everyone, i am e-mail-less!!! i dont think i can receive any either.

also i saw the paper! and the manxy made fromt page!

I havn't been down to newport wetlands for a few days (well over a week!!) so i thaught i had to make some effort given the weather was good and there was a proper high tide. As i arrived there were a few curlew 50+ but they headed back out onto the saltmarsh rather quickly. Other waders included 3 curlew sands, 1 little stint, 1 golden plover, 100 black tailed godwit, 40 dunlin, 52 lapwing, 2 ruff, 3 redshank, 1 spotted redshank, 1 greenshank, 1 green sand, 6 snipe, and 200 knot.

However the highlight of the morning was 2 arctic terns that we watched for most of the morning fishing out on the estuary and on the lagoons. 1 adult and 1 juv-1st winter. There were also plenty of passerines included 100's meadow pipit, numerous small flocks of skylark passing overhead, 12 mistle thrush OH, 1 wheatear, at least 6 stonechat about plus another 5 at uskmouth where a few ducks are starting to appear including a few gadwall.
