While working out in the backyard last night, I heard a bird singing that I wasn't familiar with. I looked up to see a male eastern bluebird sitting on the power line singing.

A couple of hours later, I heard him again except this time, he brought a female with him! Again, they were sitting on the power lines over the backyard right above where the two birdhouses are set up.

I have hope!!!

Neat! I've never seen a E. bluebird but live in hope that I will one of these days. Maybe in Ontario next week.

This is GREAT news Tammie considering that back in 1990s when I was going to school up there it was hard to imagine seeing an Eastern Bluebird on the Upper Penninsula let alone on the Ontario side of the river! Are you planning to put a nest box out?

Wonderful Tammie.

I have a pair that took over one of my nest boxes as soon as the Chicadees fledged. I should be hearing the little peeps before long.

*keeping my fingers crossed for you*

Hi Mark,

Yup, we have three houses out now and the tree swallows are looking at one. I'm hopeful for the bluebirds. Two showed up last June but I didn't have any houses out last year (we had just moved in). I'm keeping close watch to see what happens! :)

I have a bluebird dilemma - while sitting on our patio last night I saw for the 1st time this year a pair of bluebirds inspecting a "fancy" bluebird house I've had out for 5 yrs.
They have chosen the simple one on the front sycamore before to nest . The dilemma is - the last nest I saw in this house was a chickadee one and I've not cleared it out.
Will they nest anyway or should I get busy and push out the old nest?

I was watching a pair of bluebirds on a trail a few days ago a few feet away from a birdbox. They both flew up on a dead tree and perched opposite the trunk. Each one took a turn flying into a hole in the tree.I assumed this was an old woodpecker house.Nice to see them using a natural cavity rather than a manmade device.

In answer to my own ? - I finally opened the box and took out the top half of the old chickadee nest - down lined. Saw the bbs again this a.m. inspecting - hope they have enough room to build their own!

I'm back in PEI. My good news is that while in Ontario, on my last day, I finally tracked down an E. Bluebird, a lifer for me.

Congratulations, Dan. Aren't they gorgeous?? Sadly, my pair has disappeared. I haven't seen them for a couple of weeks now. Looks like nothing will use my birdhouses this year, after all. :(

Will try again next year.

Sorry the little thrushes moved out Tam.Older folks around here told me tales of the bluebird being numerous in their youth in the city and suburb.I didn't have them when I was young. in the 60s and 70s in my yard. All the bluebirds I see now are in the marshes.

Well Sam, like I said, I'm hopeful they will return next year. They've been around the yard two springs in a row so anything is possible. The tree swallows are still hanging around the house in the garage peak but they've not built a nest in it. Again, maybe next year.
