I put up a birdhouse and a black capped chickadee made a nest about two weeks or so ago. She laid 6 eggs and has been incubating for about a week. This morning there were still 6 eggs but mom wasn't in the nest. I checked on the camera in the birdhouse again this evening and there were only 2 in the nest. I quickly ran outside to investigate and saw 2 broken eggs on the ground under the birdhouse with a small hole poked in one of them, assuming from a beak. I wasn't sure if the mom knew yet so I kept watch on the camera for when she came back. At first when she came in, she inspected and then sat on the two remaining eggs but kept tossing and turning and checking outside the hole of the house. She also is no longer sleeping on the eggs. She's been pushing herself against the wall and sleeping next to them
Is this normal?? Is she okay? I don't know if birds grieve or not but I'm afraid she will abandon the nest by morning and leave the last two eggs.. I feel so awful for her.. will she stay for the remaining eggs or should I put up another house for her?
Side note: the chickadee mates are very used to me. They were my very first birds at the feeder and have become so comfortable with me that they will sit next to me while I'm refilling and cleaning the bird feeder and bath. The camera also does not bother the mom, it's been in there since she decided to make the nest. It doesn't make any noise and whatever light it uses for the night doesn't bother her at all.
