A drake and a redhead smew were on the Saline Lagoon at Teesside late afternoon. Diving repeatedly in an ice-free patch of water. Video here (no sound due to the noise of the road traffic):

There was also a drake common scoter on the Tidal Pool.

Earlier, at Newburn, a long-tailed duck was fairly close to the sea wall at high tide. The sea was quite choppy, so it was difficult to keep the bird in the viewfinder.

Help with identification

Can anyone identify this gull which a friend of mine photographed in his garden in Brandon Co. Durham. I have looked through one of my books and the only gulls that I can come up with are 1st winter common gull, 1st winter ring-billed gull and 2nd winter herring gull. I will stick my neck out and say 1st winter common gull but any help much appreciated.

Hi Ron,

1st winter Common Gull.:t:

Cheers,

Greenabella:
No sign of the smew, but, kestrel opposite car park, grreenshank, drake scoter amongst the teal, wigeon, shell ducks etc, along the path plus a Slav, grebe on the causway in front of the hide.
Med gull and the usual knot etc at Newburn Bridge.
Slav, grebe still at hartlepool marina, along with RB mergansers and cormorants.
No sign of the BT diver.

Image 1 is the grebe from the Causway at Greenabella, well I'm assuming It's a Slav, and not a Black necked!.

Also another short video of the hartlepool Grebe.

Couple from South Shields today.
Pleasant walk along the cliff tops, turned into a blizzard.
Plenty Oyster catchers, redshank, knot, turnstone, gulls, mipits and skylark about, but no sign of any owls, snow buntings or the lapland while we were there.
Off shore were cormorants, eider and a couple of fulmar.

Low Barns Thursday, Hartlepool Friday

Just a couple of pics from Low Barns yesterday nice Jay, and Long Tailed Tits. Views of a Bittern have been made a few days this week - sadly not by me.
Also went up to Langdon Beck, about 8 to 10 inches of snow but main road was clear - grouse were well dispersed over the moors (stood out in snow) however there were 4 grouse on the lek facing up to each other.

Today Mediterranean Gull landed right next to my car today at Jacksons Landing it seemed so out of place in a blizzard.

low barns

Yeah it was ringed, I don't think I saw a bird that wasn't ringed at low barns. They have certainly worked hard at netting the birds up there.

Nice to see the sun today.

Had an afternoon visit to Saltholme and surrounding area - after a very brief chat with Derek Clayton at Saltholme, I decided to just head for ZW Road and then have a brief look in Hartlepool Marina.. Didn't see anything along ZWR however had the best views of the Slavonian Grebe in Hartlepool Marina i've had.. It was very tolerant and was more than happy to allow a slow and close approach without it swimming away :t:

Couple of pictures from this afternoon's visit:

Started the morning in Gateshead with the target species being Red Kites against the 'blue sky' for a change :-O

After that i headed to South Tyneside in the hope of the SEO's in a bit better light. Gusting winds were a big problem and the only bird that showed was not really interested in hunting / flying - but if disturbed only flew approx 50 yards then tried to hunker down and shelter from the strong winds..

Finished the day in the old quarry and an old friend still in the same location and just as inquisitive, hiding from the Little Owl forces him to peep around rocks to see what you are doing :t:

Low Barnes

Low Barnes over this last week. Saw very much then usual suspects but also caught what i reckon is a Stonechat. Unfortunately was at a distance but managed a few record shots. A first for me at Low Barnes. Also was a Robin posing in the snow by the feeding station.
