Durham Birding (1 Viewer)

Those pics of the Short eared Owl reminded me of one of my first trips out with my Staffordshire pup, one late summer evening we were trekking towards a big pond when this shortie stopped quartering the reedbeds to investigate him, it circled us about 10 metres away checking out the tasty looking little black head peering up out of the long grass and a couple of times " coming in " then backing off, obviously keen but put off by my prescence , it even went away in a hestitant fashion turning for a look back occasionally, great memories.

Ward Jackson Park:
RN parakeets, mistle thrush, gold & greenfinch, nuthatch, tree creeper, blue & great tits, wood pigeons etc + the usual ducks, geese and gulls on the pond.
Bumped into Jim, who told me about the Slav, grebe, so we called at the Marina before going home.
Needles to say, the sun had gone in, but at least the grebe was there, also the BT diver, little grebe and couple of mergansers.

Also short video of the Slavonian Grebe.

That's got to be bollocks. It's not an asset of theirs.
Their website states that you should arrange collection. Don't let them get away with it.

Still waiting for the administrators to decide what happens to insurance claims like mine. In the meantime still without my Lens. I can arrange collection but it knacks my Insurance claim. I'm like a turkey waiting for Christmas:C

Trip to Hartlepool and Saltholme today, started at Hartlepool and had the BT Diver and Slavonian Grebe straight away but distant.. Hung around for a bit and the Slav Grebe did come a little closer but not as close as i'd have liked - Diver moved into the middle of the big basin.. Also 10 RB Mergansers and a single Shag visible but again quite distant. Weather awful, freezing, snowing, blowing a gale - not good for pictures at all - LOL

Went along to Saltholme, primarily for cup of tea and a warm, had a quick look in the Phil Stead hide which produced nothing at all, not even any Goldfinches in the adjacent trees.. After a nice sandwich in the cafe (and a nice natter with Derek Clayton) we had bonus views of a female Kestrel eating the Weasel it had killed minutes earlier..

Back to Hartlepool but weather was worse and light very poor - so no further opportunities for Slav Grebe shots..

Couple of pics from today

A 1st winter Yellow-legged Gull was a huge surprise flying south west over my patch (fields by the Wear north east of Durham city) early afternoon. There were also good numbers of other gulls including several Common and Great Black-backed.
