Early morn at Tunstall res wood - saw 4 different male redstarts at various points in the wood. A nice male Pied Flycatcher, and heard 2 more. GS Woodpecker, Garden Warbler, heard a wood warbler at the far end of the wood, but not seen 3 Nuthatch, 2 treecreepers. Common Sandpiper and dipper and bottom of water shute on the damn, and 6 Goldcrest on dam wall.

Had a ride over to Muggleswick this morning where I bumped into some BF members :t:

We stood around a while listening to a Wood Warbler but only giving occasional glimpses at first. Moving along the road we had first rate views of a male Pied Flycatcher at more or less eye level and a few yards off the roadside. Another one was nearby.

I hung around trying for some photos when some passing birders told me about another Wood Warbler further along the road. I accompanied them back to the one we'd seen earlier to find it in the trees overhanging the road with another one was calling from across the stream.

A pair of Green Woodpeckers flew through chasing each other around and likewise a pair of Jay. Redstart were around as well but difficult to spot amongst the leafy trees especially with so many tits about.

Other birds seen - Nuthatch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper, Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and Chaffinch.

I took the Stanhope road over the moor seeing only Lapwing, Curlew, Red Grouse and a pair of Grey Partridge.

A brief stop at Bollihope produced two male Ring Ouzel, Wheatear x5 and a Grey Wagtail on the stream.

I stopped off at Low Barns on the way home. Great to see and hear so many birds about. Loads of Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff split 50:50. Garden Warbler was near the river by the south hide. The south hide produced Oystercatcher, Little Grebe x3, Goldeneye - odd looking eclipse drake, Cormorant x2, Canada Goose x5, Greylag Goose x7, Common Sandpiper x1, Mallard and Pochard. Around half a dozen Sand Martin over the pond but no sign of them using the artificial nest site.

West Pond held only Tufted Duck, Mallard, Coot, Moorhen, Greylag Goose, Canada Goose, Mistle Thrush and Grey Heron x2.

Managed to fit in a two & a half hour stint on Hedley Hall Fell NZ2156/2155/2255 this morning, though it needs a full day to do this place justice.
Decent numbers of the common warblers & a good selection of others;
Common Whitethroat 15+
Garden Warbler 5+
Blackcap 10+
Chiffchaff 3+
Willow Warbler 25+
plus Pheasant, Curlew (over), Swift, Swallow, Great-spotted Woodpecker (2), Skylark, Song Thrush, Long-tailed Tit, Coal Tit, Goldfinch, Linnet, Bullfinch, Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting
Did'nt manage any Lesser W'throat or Gropper's but it's a big area & as Arnie used to say "I'll be back".

Steve, is this sort of aggressive, insulting response really necessary? You may disagree with the "hijacking" of the thread by such trivial actvities as site quizzes, but surely it does no harm. It's just a bit of fun, isn't it? You're not against that, are you?

Perhaps you have a personal issue with Seggs, but I feel obliged to say that, in my experience, he is a top bloke and birder. Last year, I, as a very inexperienced sea watcher, posted a question on this thread. Not one person replied except Seggs, and he did that by private message, no doubt to avoid making me look like a total idiot in public. I've only met him once, but I just don't think he warrants being besmirched in this way. He has taken the trouble to start his own local patch thread for South Tyneside, so I think that shows his commitment to local patch birding. He was just responding to Will@Bill's testing pics. Does that really deserve references to his "inane wafflings"?

Or perhaps you were joking and just forgot to add a smiley? I hope so.

Malcolm

Malcolm - my thoughts exactly. Primarily a photographer with a relatively new interest in birding i have to admit i'm very inexperienced. However having met Seggs on two separate occasions i have to say i have found him to be a most friendly & helpful person, i don't think people like him deserve this kind of treatment.

Hi Guy's,

Was at Tunstall Reservoir mid morning where i bumped into a group of 4 birders (2 with cameras and two 'genuine' birders), didn't think to ask their names. Anyway i saw Redstarts, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Chiffchaff, Pied Flycatcher Great & Blue Tits, Robins, Oystercatcher and a pair of Buzzards overhead the opposite side to the woods. Then onto Edmundbyers via Stanhope where i managed to see a Mistle Thrush, Stonechat & Ring Ouzel. No big deal i guess, but i've never seen a Pied Flycatcher or Ring Ouzel ever before - so it was a great day for me.... :t:

Houghton area Local Patch (19:00-22:30) / tripe

First stop on a superb, calm, bright evening was The Gate.
Numerous broods of Lapwings, 3 adult Redshank (hopefully 3 mates on nests ?), single feeding Ringed Plover which just about did a full circuit in 20mins - total role reversal between the two ringed plover species here this year. Two pair each of Curlew, Oystercatcher & Shelduck added colour & noise.
Two species stood out on this visit, firstly a solitary Pink footed Goose hiding amongst 20 or so Greylags and perhaps more significantly a Snipe probing about well away from the waters edge.... perhaps we'll have breeding birds this year ? - i cant think of anywhere else in our 5km radius study area which has them. Closest others are South Hetton Cokeworks, Jacksons at Elemore, nr Hallgarth & Sherburn Hill.
Approx 150 Wood Pigeons fed around the pool field, a couple of pairs of Skylarks looked to be attending nests & a Dunnock tended 3 fat fledglings in the nest, close to the gate.
Walking back a juvvy Tawny begged twice, accompanied by several mobbing calls, but by the time i got to the road a couple of dog walkers were standing chatting - check back for him next time.

A roadside Little Owl has been getting harder to see as the buds have been opening, but he was perched prominently this evening, adjacent to his tumbled down house.

RM's for a change...
At last another passage wader ! A handsome Whimbrel feeding actively alongside a pair each of Curlew & Oystercatcher at pool IV. It remained till 21:30, but lifted with the others & appeared to go down into the flighting pond area. A pair of late Teal, had me in anticipation for a few moments, as they dropped in to II for the night.
Had a listen out for Quail, but to no avail - although Water Rail confirmed as being on territory again this year with a bird calling from a Typha swamp. Another visitor found a Roe Deer fawn today - who knows what else is lurking in those GNF plantations :eek!:
2 Cuckoo singing again tonight - one singing just about constantly, although it paused as a male Long-eared came in close to land & call. The Cuckoo started up again, as the owl moved off, continuing his monotonous calling as the full moon shone & mist formed & rose from the lakes. Even then he kept singing after the light finally faded at 22:00.

I dont see a problem with that .....all i want to do is KEEP OUT of trouble.

Maybe you could post questions under the appropriate BirdForum headings to solicit more of a response ?
For Example:-

Tips For New Birders
Advice, tips and hints for birders of all levels, from birders of all levels!
Sea Watch
A forum for Birders with an interest in Sea and Shore birds

Hope this helps.

If you see nothing wrong with this sort of insulting comment, then in my opinion you lack even the most basic levels of common decency!

It would be far better that this thread had a few light hearted quiz/puzzles than a load if bickering over one persons obnoxious and unhelpful comments.

No, It would be far better if this thread had a few Local Patch Reports - strangely enough thats what its here for ! :eek!:
I dont know who you are "Mick", but im sure you wont mind if i politely direct you to the appropriate sections:-
;)

You can quiz away till your hearts content here:-

Bird Forum Fun Quizzes
Test your knowledge - are you a super brain or a bird brain?

and for light hearted off topic frivolity:-

Ruffled Feathers
Relax with a joke, a story, or anything else of interest - treat this as an off-topic bar after a long day's birding!

I have already acknowledged my post was (deliberately) blunt & rude, and i wholeheartedly stand by it.
I dont want to be looking in on this thread after several years now, to read poorly worded off topic tripe, anymore than you want to read, "insulting comments".:t:

People do their best when posting, poorly worded or otherwise! If we follow the route you propose we will end up with a thread that only allows the elitist birding intelligentsia to post or indeed offer an opinion.

Mick

after adding both wood warbler and reed warbler to my yearlist on saturday i decided to do my local patch on sunday afternoon.
after a lengthy walk and several hours my list for the day was 53 species, birds of the day were willow tit, garden warbler, blackcap, common sandpiper, yellow wagtail, sedge warbler and a single pink footed goose with a limp

Recent discussion initiated by RA on warbler no's :-
I watched a singing male Lesser Whitethroat on and off all day from a large garden which i've visited every year since 2001. Never previously seen/heard one here.
Little owl active all day, but keeping in the shade, whereas a regular adjacent the A1M was on top of his post both this morning & this afternoon.
Talking to one very active fieldworker today. He cites Garden warbler as one thats in "above average" numbers, although the bulk of them have come in late.

If it remains calm this evening, then we should be in with a good chance of locating a few singing Quail . - There call can be far reaching when the conditions are right - its a whistly, fluty song "quit-ker-hit", which resembles "wet-my-lips" or so they say.
hope this helps.

A Final Word......

Any organisation/establishment, or thread for that matter where a person has been berated and insulted for something as trivial as their use of the English language, is not a thing I wish to be associated with. I personally (I do not speak for my wife here) will never again post on this thread.
It is a shame, because this thread has the potential to be a very interesting and unique local site, if it were given a chance.
I have made a conscious decision not to stoop to the levels some others seem to frequent. I will not become abusive or insulting, though it has taken a mammoth effort to refrain! This is, as it suggests in the title my final word. I doubt however that it will be the last word on the subject;)

Kindest regards to all the decent people out there.

MICK

I concur regarding more than normal Garden Warbler's, noted at least four singing males in a small corner of Waldridge Fell this afternoon.
Also seems to have been a noticeable increase in Swift's in the last few day's, I see them virtually everywhere now, even in Washington!! ;)
Steve, following your advice in the past I might check the Burdon Moor area later this week for Quail if the weather holds.

well i find my treatment on here very poor again by mr evans, just because my literary skills don,t come up to a expected standard!(sounds like my school reports)...and the odd post is poor, did not realise you had to have at least a "0" level in english to post on the durham thread.
what would happen if someone with real learning difficulties entered the thread?...i dread to think...
and i see another good lad (mick)has left because of the latest insulting attack...what a great advert for the forum.
i can see where the pic puzzles issue is not a good idea, there was no danger of it becoming a take over.
also whats wrong with helping people out? a little advice in the right direction by pm. is that so bad! or asking for advice?
on a end note....i would like to thank everyone for thier support on this matter, on here and by pm.

Warning! This thread is more than 5 years ago old.
It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
