For adult birds I personally think Barn Owls are very far up on the cuteness ladder.

On uglyness I think Marabou Stork is a good contestant.

I think the plumage around the face of an Egyptian Goose makes them pretty ugly looking

A quick trawl through my pictures. The owls and indeed wader chicks are good calls for cutest though beaten by the Frogmouth - adult & juvenile Tengmalm's and Piping Plover chick attached. My personal ugliest is Wild Turkey - just lap up that head shot! Mind you a Moorhen chick is something only a mother could love.

For cuteness I like little tail-less round thingies, like Chestnut-headed Tesia, Rufous Antpitta, Pygmy Cupwing, and buttonquails. Though if you're including chicks, I'm defo with the baby plover gang :t:.

also thingies that are much smaller than they 'ought to be', like the ixobrychus bitterns

There are a lot of cute birds, but ones that come to mind immediately are some water birds: Dovekie, Piping Plover, Pied-billed Grebe

Ugly birds that immediately come to mind are Wild Turkeys and Turkey Vultures

Roseate Spoonbill could qualify for both cute and ugly. Gorgeous from a distance but once you get a close up view of their bald heads you might change your mind.

Yes, I can't argue with that except to add that it is the drakes which are the ugly brutes, the ducks are petite enough!

I like the Muscovy duck. One of my favourite birds. However, I agree it is rather ugly looking. To me it looks like the nose of someone who is a great whisky drinker.
