August Moths (2 Viewers)

That's true. I can't find where I read about it's uniqueness (in a UK perspective), but you're right re brown silver-line for example.

A bit behind on updates, so here's just a quick round up of August so far. Blue-bordered Carpet, Beautiful Hook-tip, Single-dotted Wave, Double Lobed, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Straw Dot, Yellow-barred Brindle, Early Thorn & Copper Underwing have all joined the macro year list....

Other highlights have included multiple Black Arches (up to a year best of 6 so far) and a second Leopard Moth for the year.

It's all relative I guess. They're a good looking moth that I usually don't get many of (less than annual). Of the nine I've trapped since starting in May 2020 six have been in the past fortnight or so. It's possible that if I were trapping a couple of miles away I'd get them much more frequently. Or not at all. And there are probably moths that I get routinely that would be a big deal for others elsewhere. I've seen people on here trapping their first Pale Pinions, Clouded Borders, Least Black Arches, Yellow-barred Brindles and more this year, none of which would be considered at all remarkable up here. I bet you get a load more species all the time that I've yet to encounter!

Thanks JWN. Def all relative as there's even stuff FBoroJohn gets at one end of FBoro that never grace my urban site at the other end! And that's a matter of single digit miles

Oak Eggar and Barred Rivulet the best I caught with a couple of traps out in Hampshire Downs last night.
Other highlights were Dark Swordgrass and Brown-line Bright-eye

Are Black Arches unusual then? I've had many this year in multiple traps sites.
As mentioned in other replies it can depend on where you are in the country. There were 27 in the whole of Yorkshire last year, which was considered a good total, so I was pleased to catch my first a couple of weeks ago. Often people post about moths that they catch quite regularly (presumably in southern counties) that have almost a mythical status up here and I can usually only dream of. I live in hope each time I put the trap out.

The main thing I have noticed this month is the absence of what are normally the common moths - hardly any large Yellow Underwings (no Lessers at all), very few Dark Arches, just modest numbers of Common Rustics. Uncertains seem to have finished already.

Dusky Thorn, Tawny-speckled Pug and 'Hawthorn Moth' new for year in a catch of 53/22 this morning.

10 of 21 last night/am highlights- 3 Jersey Tigers, Yellow Shell, Maiden’s Blush,
Double-striped Pug x2, (NFY), Gypsy Moth also (NFY).

My understanding is that without extracting their tackle and shoving it under a microscope they are not possible to confidently assign to species. All those I've trapped have been logged as Grey/Dark agg without a second thought.
