hooded oriole

  1. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

The hollyhocks in my garden make a good perch for the birds.

    Hooded Oriole juv

I believe we've had more juvenile hooded and bullock's orioles than previous years.
  4. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

This immature male still has a bit of greenish coloring to his yellow feathers.
  5. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

The lake's color made a good background to show off this beautiful male.
  6. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

This male was sitting on our deck railing while the female was at the sugar water feeder nearby.
  7. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

FOS this male arrived within a few days of previous years records. So far I'm seeing a female and younger male with him but more should soon arrive. They'll nest here and stay through September so prepare for lots more pics.
  8. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

One of many different Orioles that came to our flowering palm.
  9. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

All but two Bullock's orioles have left but there's still six Hooded orioles at my feeders and they're just as cute as they can be.
  10. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

Caught this one in the early morning sunlight.
  11. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

The orioles are keeping me busy making sugar water but that's okay because they're fun to photograph.
  12. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

Not the best lighting conditions but I love the colors on these orioles.
  13. Surprise Hooded Oriole

    Surprise Hooded Oriole

Hi Folks; Was out on the back porch just about dusk and noted some activity in the Aloe Vera blooms on the far side of the Garden. As I had never seen a Hooded Oriole here before, when I looked through my view finder I was surprised to see a Hooded Oriole feeding on the blooms. Flash required.
  14. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

This younger oriole still has the grayish wing.
  15. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

This male loves to sit on this branch attached to our deck railing. He's just watching while another male drinks from the hummer feeder nearby.
  16. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

I've been waiting for the females to arrive and this is the first one this year. She's apparently already picked a mate since there is always one in close vicinity to her. I can hardly wait to see the youngsters when they try to figure out how to drink from the hummer feeders.
  17. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

Had to take this one through the window. Two of these males arrived a day after the Bullock's Oriole-also over a week earlier than in previous years. These orioles also knew which hummer feeder to go to for the larger feeder ports.
  18. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

This isn't the greatest of pictures, but I liked the fall colors (which in our area is actually the lack of rain) and the look on the bird that may have been thinking it's time to migrate south.
  19. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

It took me almost all summer but I finally got my oriole inflight photo before these last juvenile birds leave on their migration.
  20. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

This is a juvenile and one of many enjoying the sugar water feeders and pollen on our flowers in the garden. They'll soon migrate south to Mexico and South America to spend their winter then return in the spring.
  21. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

The "Hooded Oriole" male has a brilliant orange "hood", belly and rump; black tail, throat and upper breast. His wings are crossed with two white bars. The tail is long and graduated. This bird is a juvenile and was just waiting for a spot on the sugar-water feeder.
  22. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

Photographed on our back deck, these birds migrate to our area in the spring and stay through the summer.

  24. Hooded Oriole

    Hooded Oriole

I was disappointed that the Oceanographic Society cancelled the excursion I'd booked last Sunday - a boat out to the Farallon Islands. This time of year there are grey and blue whales feeding out there, several species of dolphins and pinnipeds, great white sharks (year round), and a dozen or so...
