    Winter - 56

Winter ... Pair of another beautiful little migratory ducks ... Usually they stay here for a while longer than the Pintails ... Shovelers ... and Red-crested Pochards ... A decreasing population trend has been observed ... Watch this lovely pair feeding actively and showing head-shaking...

    Garganey.... again

I promise... this is the last picture of this handsome Garganey. I just loved him.

Another picture of the male - thought he looked rather regal in this pose.

    Garganey

Back to Kinnordy and my new camera. I'd been wondering what a blob was hiding in the reeds at the edge of the island. It seemed to be fast asleep for ages. Suddenly one of the other visitors said "Garganey" and there he was!!! Come out for a swim, later to be joined by his lady...

Garganey is not a frequent duck in our latitudes, they only stay a short time at the beginning of the spring in their way north. Luckily a flock of ten happened to be this weekend at the same time as me to allow some shots, a couple even coming nearer for a close-up of the male

At dusk this handsome male Garganey remained still allowing a long exposure in the failing light. 1/10th at f/5.6, 1600 ISO

    Garganey

Gosh I'm tired... having got back from my holiday on Saturday evening, my birding pal wanted to go to Kinnordy on Sunday and then leave to go to Fife at 6.30am on Monday. Sooo I'll start with the Kinnordy visit on Sunday when I at last saw the Garganey, a Lifer for me and quite a rarity up...

    Male Garganey

Garganey (Anas querquedula) photographed at the Vale Reserve, Guernsey three days ago (12/4/2013). Target distance was 44.5 metres so not quite the detail I would have liked.
  20. Garganey

    Garganey

Normally scarce, dabbling duck but this drake at Minsmere has been very obliging for recent visitors.

Heard about several of these being seen in the Forest Of Dean over the weekend, so made the trip over on Monday to see them. Great views of a striking duck.
