Status of Large Copper in the UK

None taken! I didn't say I agree with it - in fact many of the rarer species in NE Derbyshire that I have seen over the past few years have his finger prints all over them! (historically anyway). To some extent any species that are former breeders may just be justifiable in a helping hand (Small...

Status of Large Copper in the UK

My own images taken on my phone from CV recently. Met the guy in question - very skilled and delighted in explaining these were Serbian stock and told me all about them. Claims they take to common dock so next season will get interesting. Not year to debate the rights and wrongs - if they simply...

    Norfolk birding

Well you’ve picked a great time to visit! I apologise as didn’t realise you haven’t been before and aren’t to know the demise of certain birds. Both reserves will delight you anyway so enjoy finding what you can. I have enjoyed many occasions with Montys and Orioles - such a shame they no longer...

    Norfolk birding

I would say good luck! My understanding is that sadly Oriole and Montys are lost as breeding birds (and folks wouldn’t add them here if they were not). Turtle Dove hangs on and Titchwell often gets a mention around the car park in terms of birds “available to all”. Corn Bunting used to be good...

British Big Year - 2016. 398 so far.

He didn’t go about it to tell others - he did it for himself. He’s quiet and unassuming. His effort was “outed” by others (I’m not naming here). I doubt at this stage he’s going to want to go back and document everything - he was even asked for photos of each bird to “prove” he saw them etc...

I know Mark personally and it’s no “urban myth”. Is he obliged to publish something he did for himself? And have it pulled apart, vetted and commented on?

    willow or marsh tit norfolk

I also think its fair to say Willow has virtually gone from Norfolk - I am sure Tim told me its a description sp. now.

    EDG hinge tension...how's yours?

I have a second hand pair of Nikon HG 8x42 out of warranty - mine suddenly became very loose and so as I have other bins I decided to send them off to Nikon. They emailed me a postage sticker etc, just had to package up. They have sent an estimate back including postage at £55. I did reply...

    Norfolk birding

Really sorry to hear this Penny, what a thoroughly nice chap your Father was. Never too much trouble to discuss birds in any way shape or form. A testing time for you and the family I am sure but bask in the knowledge he did what he loved - many don't get that same opportunity. Lots of love.

British Big Year - 2016. 398 so far.

He's a fellow Derbyshire lad and was keeping things very low key for a while. But saw him at Spurn recently and he acknowledged this massive attempt was "out there". Its been a fantastic year for him obviously and during it he's moved house and kept working.......!

    Derbyshire County Birding

Yes it looks like it as seen on 8th June. Dave retweeted the info first, amongst others and I guess BGuides picks it up from there somewhere. Would be nice if still around.......

    Derbyshire County Birding

Several places Stuart. The easiest will be Carr Vale, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust - ten mins from Chesterfield at Junction 29a M1. Just google it. Well worth a visit anyway - Glossy Ibis recently and local birders on site. Also Poolsbrook Marsh at the side of Poolsbrook Country Park which is...

    Confused- Are these Siskins-Portugal

Nice pics Bob - we stayed at Quinta Do Lago and I visited the reserve down towards the beach there, Rio Formosa. These BH Weavers were quite common there and also a new bird for me.

    Swarovski digiscoping

The Kowa adapter fits well on the eyepiece and can be easily adapted to fit your phone (you may need to buy an extra protection case for your iphone), see this post: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=314661 This is what I did - bought the Kowa adaptor for an iphone 4 which then didn't...

    Swarovski digiscoping

http://www.newprouk.co.uk/phoneskope/ Hi Anna, try this company. I haven't used them personally but know people who have. I am sure they will have something and are helpful on the phone when I have contacted them. I use an iphone 6 with that scope, using an adaptor I got a while ago from...

    Birding in Extremadura

Planning another trip this Spring and wondered what thoughts you guys had on dates (ie which you believe to be best). We can do 27th April to 1st May OR from 23rd May onwards (concerned we would leave it too late at this time). Planning to fly to Madrid (looks like easyjet from Luton as easy...

    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

It's hard to say in a short post but things do seem to be different. We have noted far fewer birds in to roost (of all sorts of species) and maybe the Trust have a role in that beating in mind they choose to have livestock on site (or not) and they should control water levels. I get frustrated...

    Wyver Lane Nature Reserve (DWT)

You still had a great day there then! I've had much worse over the years. In fact L Eg is still a great record for Wyver. It doesn't seem to hold them long - I've had the odd one for ten mins and also two together that flew through. If we still had the heronry there we may even encourage a...

    Swarovski repairs?

I sent my now out of warranty FH 101 head back as a screw seems to be loose affecting lateral movement. They returned it to my surprise saying it cannot be fixed but would do me a "special price" on a new one! I was very surprised as it seems innocuous. Am I a cynic thinking they don't...

Anyone else like birds and cricket? Birds seen at cricket grounds.

"After reading KP's appalling whining book I wish he had never bothered qualifying for England. I can't imagine Colin Cowdrey writing such a litany of moaning self justification" Quite agree - I was bought his book at Christmas and quite looked forward to it. By the end I just thought what a...
