    Yorkshire Birding

Thanks for the info, Ken. It was a real feast of raptors at Sleddale today, seeing at least three Rough Legs, 3 common buzzards, 4 peregrines, 1 kestrel, 1 sparrowhawk, 1 merlin and a Great Gray shrike hopefully now in residence for a while.
  4. Rough-legged Buzzard diving on prey

    Rough-legged Buzzard diving on prey

This is the second shot of a sequence of two showing the buzzard with talons poised to grab the prey. Unfortunately the prey wasn't visible behind the grass, I suspect a small mammal that probably dived down a hole, and the bird came up empty handed. So close but so far for both him and me!
  5. Rough-legged Buzzard diving on prey

    Rough-legged Buzzard diving on prey

Arrived at the moor just in time to see the bird plunge dive down to the moor after prey, this is the first shot of a series of two.

    Immature Rough-legged Buzzard in flight

Visited the location three times over 5 days and spent about 15 hours waiting for the bird to come close enough to get a detailed shot of this rare visitor to our area.

Thanks to you guys for the comments about the photos. Yes, I was lucky to get a bird so close, but it did take three visits to get this. Most of my photos are in the Cleveland area so I usually post on Teesmouth Bird Club website, or the Durham thread on this site, but when I get decent shots in...

    Yorkshire Birding

Good views of Rough-legged buzzards at Sleddale today where as many as four different birds has been reported. Got some closer shots today showing a better view of facial features and a couple of shots of a Rough-legged buzzard coming in for a kill which I think it missed.

    Yorkshire Birding

Hi, My wife and I are visiting Spurn in the next few days hoping to see a few of the rarer migrants. Just wondered what access requirements are. Is it possible to "explore" the Spurn peninsular if you are not a member of the YWT or the local bird club. I am a member of Teesmouth Bird Club...

    Possible Reed Warbler

I posted these two photographs of a bird seen at South Gare on the Teesmouth Bird Club website suspecting Reed Warbler. Some questions were raised about the possibility of it being a Marsh warbler, maybe immature. The photos were taken in very poor light so I don't think the brownish colour of...

    Barn owl with prey

This was the male of a pair of Barn Owls expected to fledge three young at any time. The male is by far the most active hunter often having returned to the nest site 6 or 7 times before the female appears. The birds usually appear late in the evening so you had to be lucky to be there on an...

    Curlew in flight

The curlew appeared in front of me whilst I was trying to get shots of Common Terns bringing fish in for their young. I thought the background turned out well and perhaps made the picture.

    Broadband on Mull

I've found Orange the best for mobile broadband, but quite slow even at the best signal points on Mull.
  22. Close Gannet

    Close Gannet

I was at Bempton Cliffs in Yorkshire recently trying to get some better photographs of Gannets. It was a fine day with gentle breeze and plenty of birds flying close so took lots of shots. This one was the closest I've ever got to a Gannet and thought I would post a cropped image of the bird's...
