Yorkshire Birding (9 Viewers)

A bit disappointing after the last few days, there had been an obvious clear out of many birds including most of the scarcities, but there were still plenty of migrants around and a few new ones appeared from late morning, mainly Robins and thrushes. A Little Bunting was seen at Sunny Cliff...

That's gotta be an understatement. Having been stuck in Leeds all weekend it would be fair to say that I am green with envy of those who witnessed the fall. Best for a long time in many places.

The radio system at Spurn is under special licence run by the YWT and Spurn Bird Observatory. To have a license you have to be a member of Friends of Spurn and pay an annual radio license fee, however the license is limited to the number of people using it, so i'm sorry but there are none available at the moment.

Thanks for clarifying that Andy - that stance is fully understandable to be honest.

Flamborough

2 Pallas Warblers present today, 1 at south landing and 1 at holmes gut near north landing, a couple of yellow browed warblers at south landing too, along with 1 grey parakeet! which has been around for a couple of weeks, a few chiffchaff around too

After spectacular viewings of the Osprey at Wheldrake on Monday - including 2 wonderful dives into one of the lakes, the second dive resulting in a carp of about 2lbs! - I decided to venture out East and make my debut at Spurn. After reading all the posts on here, and chatting to an extremely nice and very knowledgeable guy called Chris on Monday at Wheldrake (nice to have met you Chris, if you are reading this!), I just had to see it for myself and my trusty Canon 50D. Having not visited before, I genuinely did not know what to expect, and as it usually does on these occasions, it was totally different to what I had imagined. In my naivety, I thought I would roll up and have all sorts of spectacular birds just lining up waiting to have their mugshots taken by yours truly; NOT the case!!! As an earlier poster noted, today was relatively quiet, and the birds had to be found. They were also the most difficult to photograph birds I've ever encountered - talk about never sitting still! As I drove away, was I disappointed? ABSOLUTELY NO WAY! I loved every second and can't wait to go back. OK I didn't see any so-called rarities, but what I did see included: Meadow Pipit, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Chaffinch, Siskin, Goldfinch, Brambling, Alba Wagtail, Goldcrest, Robin, Redwing, Songthrush, Blackbird, Starling, Wheatear, Curlew, Dunlin, Turnstone, Black Tailed Godwit, Little Egret, Knot, Redshank - and that's just the ones I can remember off the top of my head.
In the words of Arnie - I'll be back.
Right, off to see if I've managed any half decent photos!
Cheers,
Tom

Thanks for the update Andy

Does anyone have any more information regarding the Black Necked Grebe at Golden Acre Park which is being reported on Bird Guides??

Cheers,

Richard

Spurn Area

The person who ownes the fields at Sammies has been to see me tonight as birders visiting the horse paddocks are leaving gates open. He is does not want to lock gates between paddocks or any gates for that matter. He is not moaning about birders in the paddocks and before any one says it is permissive access so he can exclude us all.

Also the church yard in Kilnsea has been locked by families of graves due to birders trampling on graves.

The area does get very busy and all regulars will continue to put news out but we do expect concideration for others property, people and birds.

Richard I will probably check it out tomorrow. I'll post if I can. It's where I did all my early birding before I could drive. I used to cycle up to Adel Dam and Golden Acre most days.

It sounds like it's at the Parkway end of the lake, which I'd expect it to be. If it isn't on, try Adel Dam lake next door - you can now get in, with no key needed.

Nice to see it getting a good bird.

I thought I'd go on my way to work, as I work in Horsforrth but I've just found out I'm on the school run instead, so I'm going to aim for lunchtime or on my way home at 5-ish. Here's hoping it's on the main lake as I don't fancy trekking through Adel Dam in a suit & work shoes!!

Fair shout andy. Birders need to tale responsibility for their own actions and those of other birders to engender goodwill from the wider community

Some shots of the one-eyed Lapland Bunting at kilnsea yesterday.

(minor edit)

I fully concur Hotspur. As I understand access arrangements, the right to roam only applies to UNenclosed land. Tramping about and leaving gates open is just not on. Stomping about on private land without permission isn't gonna do birders any favours.

Are you not missing an opportunity to raise some cash for conserving spurn here?? Seems like a plausible idea??? Probably reasons why not ...but just wondered. I personally feel so overwhelmed on spurn.....might work?

The footpaths at the Dam are much better than they used to be. You can get to both hides without too much worry of becoming muddy. I'd be more worried about the footpaths in G A Park, they aren't the best and are generally pretty slimey with goose crap.
I should be able to bob down to the park in the morning and have a shufti. PM your mobile number and I'll let you know if bird still there.

Of interest to desperate local yearlisters, several Brambling on Trip Lane near Collingham are just inside West Yorks (SE376465, http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&s...noid=4C_F1sazfg3qAiVZQkEmVg&cbp=12,71.06,,0,5) These are presumably last week's arrivals filtering inland (makes you think that many of those birds are still to be found inland somewhere, like the Great Grey Shrikes) Quite a few Redwings about now, and six Snipe were another nice addition to the growing bike list. Hopefully can put BNG on it tomorrow.

As Keith says, this footpath to Adel Dam (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&s...oid=kmDCW3xhVjfSPEHb8LTNTA&cbp=12,253.14,,0,5) from Arthington Lane was resurfaced as part of the 'improvements' which saw the installation of the new hide. To be fair, this part of the work was very welcome as the path was a river for most of the winter.

Brambling also at the York osprey site today too. No sign osprey though was reported 0730.Nice to see u there Jim!!!

There are dozens of Bramblings at Spurn at the moment. The Lapland Bunting, Egyptian Goose & Jack Snipe were all still on show yesterday. The flock of 5 Redpoll in a reedbed were a nice bonus, and this daft Goldcrest had a bath & then nearly took its eye out by swabbing its crest on the barbed wire! I can't post the hand-held injured Water Rail because its the wrong dimensions for this forum :p. I can't even put it on my blog, as I've run out of free web space :p But you can see that pic here:
