    Tripod rest

If you are using it without a carry strap with the legs over the shoulder a short section of foam pipe lagging over the leg(s) is a popular solution.

Swarovski NL 14x52 and SLC 15x56 - a brief comparison

It depends what you mean by usable. I find they're fine for a quick glance/id check, but not for detailed study. Obviously range plays a part too. If I want to properly study a bird I'd use a tripod, but for quickly checking something they're usable for swift look for my fairly steady hands...

anyone have any tips on birding? how was your first experience?

Walk around locally and stop and chat with anyone carrying binoculars - 9 out of 10 of them will be happy to help beginners. Join your local birding group (@John Cantelo led a great group when I was a teen)

    Moth trap

Vanes should ideally be angled at the bottom to fit in the funnel and probably be square at the top running the full height of the light. Agreed -Powering down at 3 isn't ideal, look at batteries with longer run time (I use a 12v LiPO designed for scooters).

Sincere apologies! Can you help me ID this moth please

I agree it's awful, but worth knowing if you submit records to any international system (e.g. inaturalist)

Swarovski NL 14x52 and SLC 15x56 - a brief comparison

Thank you - your findings seem closer to what I would expect than those from Rokslide (but I appreciate much is subjective).

That's a gorgeous moth. I'm getting lots of flame shouldered down here - no Radford's yet though.

Moth Trap - Suffolk UK Part 2

There's plenty I struggle with even after 10 months with a trap. A combination of multiple guides and online resources helps, but there are plenty of knowledgeable folk here. Enjoy trapping!

    "Owling"

I find 7x50s fine for watching Barn Owls (SLCs) at dawn and dusk, although I've no doubt night vision would extend viewing time (at the expense of image quality).

Id estimate 50+ including vanes (Heath trap) but I didn't count all the Riband Waves or Common and Dingy Footmen. It's a small 5w led trap (12x12x12 inch cube)

Beautiful things - I only had my first a week ago which escaped...

Annoyingly the trap was knocked over. Still managed 7 Jersey Tigers, 3 Tree Lichen, 2 Dark Arches, Dusky Thorn, Pebble, and an escaping Rosy Footman.

    2020 SLC vs Helia S

Yes the brown is fine, but that stripe must be hurting sales

Other than armour they're unchanged from the late SLCs

Do you use a spotting scope alongside your bins?

I'm an on foot /public transport birder too and rarely carry a scope because of bulk/weight. The little ED50 gets more use than the 60mm fieldscope unless I'm spending a long period at one site.
