Identification
14 - 16cm.
- Jet-black central crown stripe and broad stripe through eye
- Bright orange-ochre supercilium
- Small orange-ochre spot embedded in black on rear ear-coverts
- Bright olive upperparts
- Rich orange-ochre side of head, throat and chest, fading to ochre-yellow on lower underparts
- Pale olive flanks and undertail-coverts
Sexes similar. Immatures are duller and have a mostly olive head.
Similar species
Differs from Black-capped Hemispingus by broad orange-ochre (not white) supercilium.
Distribution
Found on the eastern slope of the Andes from southern Peru to western and central Bolivia.
A fairly common to locally common restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
This species has been placed in genus Hemispingus in the past.
May form a superspecies with Black-capped Hemispingus and has been treated conspecific with it.
Habitat
Moist montanes. Mainly where extensive Chusquea bamboo occurs.
Occurs at 2300 - 3350m.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects and some plant matter.
Usually seen in pairs or small groups, often in mixed-species flocks.
Forages in bamboo and close to the ground.
No information about breeding.
A resident species.
