Asia: found in China, Tibet, Nepal
South Asia: Pakistan, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- I. x. xanthonotus:
- I. x. radcliffii;
IOC treats this species as monotypic.
Habitat
Areas with giant honeybees, such as cliffs, rocky wooded gorges and streams.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of beeswax, with the addition of flying insects.
Breeding
They are brood parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of barbets and woodpeckers.
