Identification

12.5-14 cm

  • Grey head
  • Rufous crown
  • Brown postocular stripe
  • Pink bill
  • Grey-brown upperparts, with dark brown streaks
  • Grey underparts
  • Dark brown wings and tail
  • Pale buff wing-bar
  • Buffy-rufous tertial and secondary edging
  • Grey lesser coverts

Juvenile

  • Brown head and chest
  • Dusky streaking on head
  • Dark brown streaking on chest and flanks

Distribution

Northeastern Mexico (Coahuila to Nuevo León, Zacatecas and Veracruz).

There are a couple old records from the 19th century in Arizona.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Subspecies browni no longer appears to be recognised[2]

Habitat

Desert with small bushes.

Behaviour

Breeding

May- July. The clutch consists of 3-4 eggs.
